My Thoughts...

As a teacher I have many objectives that I set out to achieve within my classroom.  My ultimate goal is to install a love for reading within my students.  I feel that through this, my teaching methods will be most effective.  Students are more apt to learn and retain information that they  enjoy learning about. However, more directly I plan to target strategies that will allow them to progress in their reading skills, foster critical thinking skills, and most importantly hold high standards for every student.  I feel that these goals will lead to producing successful readers.

It is my desire as an educator to facilitate a learning environment where I reach each student’s individual learning needs.  I try to achieve this by targeting auditory, tactile, and visual learners through various engaging activities.  Within every lesson I model the skill or concept that I want the student to understand.  I target students’ emotions through class discussions. I then encourage them to apply the skills they have gained through an activity or assignment on their own.

Nevertheless these methods would not be effective if I did not maintain a safe and relaxed learning environment. Therefore I believe that respect for your students is one of the most significant things you can maintain as an educator.  This leads to openness and trust within your classroom, allowing all students to feel safe when sharing.  My students always are aware of what is expected of them.  They understand the consequences of their actions.  It is important to foster a fair learning environment.  This encourages and teaches students to respect each other as well as other adults within the building.  All of these strategies assist in producing students that increase their reading skills while most importantly gain a passion for reading.
