Ways Parents Can Help to Improve Children's Literacy
Last updated September 22nd, 2009 at 2:27 p.m.- Fill your home with reading materials.
- Read to and with your child often and discuss what you are reading.
- Get your child his or her own library card (and one for you too!) and go to the library regularly.
- Discuss current events in the news to build your child's knowledge base.
- Go to museums, the zoo, historical sites, the theater, and other cultural events to build your child's knowledge base.
- Limit television viewing and encourage your child to watch educational programs such as those on Discovery Channel or the History Channel to build their knowledge base.
- Encourage your child to read to younger siblings or cousins; picture books today offer sophisticated vocabulary, stories, and remarkable illustrations. They are NOT just for emergent readers.
- Play word games like Scrabble or Boggle to build vocabulary skills.
