Choose 3 countries from each of the 3 categories listed below (note: near the lower part of the page, these countries are listed according to High, Middle and Least Developed) This division is most often listed as MDC or MEDC, LDC or LEDC and LLDC or LLEDC

Create charts using the Chart Wizard in Excel that compare your 3 countries from each of the 3 categories (high, medium, low) under each of the following categories:

TASK 1

  2. Find a recipe for flaming plum pudding. Where did this originate?
  3. Who is Krumpus and what country do we associate with him?
  4. In what country is Caga Tió, or the pooping log part of the Christmas tradition? Explain the tradition.
  5. In what country do they hide brooms on Christmas Eve and why?
  6. In what country is Kentucky Fried Chicken a traditional holiday meal?
  7. In this place it is traditional for worshipers to go to church on Christmas on roller skates.
  8. In what country do they put a fake spider and spider web in the Christmas tree and why?
  9. Why is it that according to some animal specialists, all Santa’s reindeer are female? In what country(s) are reindeer found today?
  10. This plant that we associate with Christmas actually translates from the old Anglo –Saxon language as “dung on a twig” (England is your country)

Positive Initiatives Project

The first part of this project involves gathering information about your topic.

 

Fact collecting for your “Positive Initiative” project:

 

Use the W5 + H method to gather information about your topic.

Who - is involved in this; who started this; who does it aim to help…

What - is this; what does this project/person do; what has been done…

When  - did this start; when did the idea for this begin…

Where - does this person/project work…

Why - is this needed…

How - do they get their money; how does this person/project help make a difference…

 

In the centre box write your W or H word. In the same box, write the answer to that question as briefly as possible. You may have more than one answer in the box.

 

In the surrounding circles, place information related to your topic.

 

Note: All 6 W + H questions may not all be relevant to your particular topic.

You MUST use at least 2 sources for your topic and you should indicate these sources on your charts. (show me where you got your info)

POSITIVE INITIATIVES PART 2

ONLY after you have completed ALL your W5 +H  organizers, THEN

 

You will prepare a PowerPoint - WITH A DIFFERENCE

 

PURPOSE - To use as an aid for you to use in giving a presentation on your topic to the rest of your class. Using your PowerPoint as an aid is NOT the same thing as reading your PowerPoint to your class.

 

In the end, EVERYONE'S  presentation should answer this question:

WHAT'S SO GREAT ABOUT THIS PERSON/PROGRAM AND WHY IS IT A POSITIVE THING?


REQUIREMENTS FOR YOUR POWERPOINT

  • NO long, wordy sentences!!!!!!
  • NO MORE than 7 words to a line and 7 lines/page (if you need to say more than what you can fit on a page, put it on another page(s)
  • Uses images that help illustrate your talk - images MUST be closely related to what you're talking about.
  • You must print an OUTLINE of your PowerPoint - ask me if you don't know how to do this
  • PowerPoint should clearly answer the 5 W's +H - the more information on your topic the better your mark.
A GOOD job is better than a FAST job. Those who finish first will present first...

Look at the Rubric hand-out for PowerPoints to see how you will be graded (in "files")

Your presentation:
  • Presentations should be about 5 minutes long
  • They should create some enthusiasm from your classmates for your topic
  • You MUST NOT read the PowerPoint to your classmates as your presentation (you CAN make extra notes to use to present)
  • Your PowerPoint is a TOOL for helping you stay on track and stay organized in giving your presentation

Positive Initiatives: Presenting Your Project

Once your PowerPoint is complete, you should

1.  Prepare notes to use while making your presentation (just like you should not read your PowerPoint to your audience, you should not read your notes to them either - these are reminders for you about what you want to say

 

2.  Review your slide presentation and PRACTICE GIVING THE PRSENTATION!

 

3.  Be ready to present starting on Wed. Jan 18

MAN-MADE ENVIRONMENTAL DISASTERS PRESENTATION

For this project, you will be investigating some man-made disasters

 

Your job:

 

Gather information using the W5 +H questions to guide you  - record this on your organizer sheets just like you did for your Positive Initiatives projects.

In addition to finding out about what happened, find out what has changed since this incident  happened (what did we learn from it)

 

Once you've gathered your information, prepare a PowerPoint to explain your topic and what we've learned since this incident happened. Use the SAME GUIDELINES  you used for your previous PowerPoint.
