What is AP Studio Art?
Overview
AP Studio Art is a college level art class taken over the course of a student's Junior and Senior year at Grasso Tech. The emphasis of the course is create artwork that explores two-dimensional visual themes. During the first year of AP Studio Art, students complete a series of artworks called "breadth" work to showcase skill in a range of themes and media. During the second year, students choose an independent topic of study, called a "concentration" and devote their entire Senior year to creating artwork based on that topic.
The Portfolio
In May of the Senior year, each student is required to submit a portfolio to the College Board for review and scoring. If the portfolio is scored a "3" out of 5 points, the student has the option of transferring the AP Studio Art class into college for credit. Teaching Philosophy
Although it's always nice to earn college credit while one is in high school, I place less importance on students getting a "good score" on the final portfolio. Instead, I provide a rigorous art curriculum; one that is challenging, inspiring, and individualized to each student's needs.
