Welcome to my Literacy page! I would love to take this opportunity to explain all that we do with literacy in 2nd grade! We have many great things going on with our kiddos involving literacy!
We have a scheduled reading block from 8:15 - 9:45, Monday through Friday. This learning block is uninterrupted by phone calls and visitors, unless there is an emergency. Having this time to work with our kiddos without interruptions gives them the optimal learning experience.
WORD WALL
Each classroom has a word wall where the students can view words and use them daily. Words are added daily and taught to the students to help them learn the new word. Each word remains on the wall until 80% of the class knows that particular word. When 80% of the class know the word, it will come down off of the word wall.
The students will also have a Personal Word Wall in their desk. They will be able to copy the words off of the word wall and add words from books and lessons as needed. The Personal Word Wall is like a personal dictionary in each students desk.
OUR LIBRARIES
Our classroom libraries are leveled and sorted by genre and themes to enhance each child's reading experiences. We are constantly testing our students with running records to make sure that they are always reading on their appropriate reading level.
We also conduct DIBELS testing on our students. DIBELS scores will tell us if the student is in the red, yellow, or green. We want all of our students to be GREEN!!!! This is how we find out if they are on track for their grade level with their reading skills.
CATCH THE READING BUG!!!
Remember...even though we are working very hard for the students at Harris, it is still crucial that the work continues at home. It is so important that your child read every night at home! A good idea is to have them read to you, or maybe even reading before they go to bed. It's great when you read to them as well! Our kiddos can't get enough literacy! It is imperative that we are constantly feeding them print, words, and books. HELP YOUR CHILD CATCH THE LITERACY BUG!
