Regular English

To star this year off, classes will study the proper way to write essays; with special emphasis placed in the first quarter on narrative style.  Students will review story element, such as plot and theme, and begin the first novel of the year The Giver. Students will review punctuation, prepositions, conjunctions, and nouns during this quarter.

The second quarter has classes delving further into the realm of literature by examining text structures, genres, Author's purpose, and figurative language (simile, metaphor, idiom, and humor).  The class novel will be Tears of a Tiger.  This quarter will also see a shift in writing from narrative to informative style.  Grammar will focus on all areas of verbs and pronouns.

Advanced English

In the first quarter students will review proper writing techniques with a focus on narrative style essay.  Part of the quarter will be spent on the novel The Giver with students applying notes on story elements to the book anddealing with the themes and plot elements from the story.  Students will aslo review the grammar rules concerning puncuation, capitalization, as well as exploring the differing types and uses of nouns.
