WELCOME TO THE CHESTERHOUSE HISTORY DEPARTMENT
History is the study of change and development in society over time. It is a distinctive and well-established discipline with its own methods, discourses and production of historical knowledge. Through the investigation of the past, history enables us to understand and evaluate how past action impacts on the present and influences the future. A study of history builds the capacity of people to make informed choices in order to contribute constructively to society and to advance democracy.
ASSESSMENT OBJECTIVES
Candidates will be expected to;
1. recall, select, organise, and deploy knowledge of the syllabus content;
2. demonstrate an understanding of:
(a) change and continuity, cause and consequence, similarity and difference;
(b) the motives, emotions, intentions and beliefs of people in the past;
3. comprehend, interpret, analyse, synthesise, evaluate and use a range of
sources as evidence in their historical context.
PREREQUISITE FOR STUDYING HISTORY
There are no prerequisites for studying this subject but learners who are passionate, diligent, motivated, perceptive, naturally curious, positive, creative and enthusiastic derive pleasure from studying History at the senior level. It is an added advantage to have the ability to express oneself coherently and logically – both orally and in writing. These skills are taught and learned throughout this phase. It is recommended that learners read widely and familiarise themselves with current affairs on a regular basis e.g. newspapers, books, journals, internet sites, etc. Regular debates and class discussions are a feature of studies in History.
