TOPICS TO BE COVERED:

Deductive reasoning, points, lines and planes, rays and angles, congruent triangles, parallel lines, quadrilaterals, transformations, area, similarity, right triangles, circles, regular polygons and circles, geometric solids, coordinate geometry.

TOOLS NEEDED:

Each student must bring to class every period:  the geometry book, a compass, a protractor, straightedge, 2 or 3 colored pencils, a green pen (I will provide the first one), a highlighter (preferably yellow), a spiral notebook for homework, at least 2 pencils, an eraser, and a calculator.  Students will also need a composition book.  This will be turned in once per chapter and does not need to be brought to class until it is due. Calculators will be used throughout this course.   Every student should have his or her own scientific calculator.  A graphing calculator is not necessary, nor is it allowed during a test.

HOMEWORK:

HOMEWORK IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS!   Homework will be assigned every class period and due the following class period.  It is to be worked on nightly.  No late homework will be accepted. Homework will only be accepted if:

It is written in pencil in a spiral notebook.

It is neat, showing all steps, unless other instructions

have been given, with answers highlighted.

A straight edge is used to draw all lines.

Students will be doing 30 min. – 60 min. of homework every night, including weekends and holidays.

MAKE UP WORK FOR EXCUSED ABSENCES:

The completion of make up work is the student's own responsibility.  Students will have one block day for each block day of excused absence to complete work.  Any missed tests MUST be made up the day the student returns to class in lieu of listening to the lecture of the day.  It is best if the student checks in with me on our "off" day and doesn't wait until the next class meeting.

GRADING:

All grades will be recorded in points.  Your percentage of the total possible points will determine your grade.  Computer printouts of your grade will be posted regularly in the classroom.  You and your parents will also receive by mail a progress report from the school in October, December, March and May.  In addition to this I will be sending home my own personal progress reports approximately every three weeks, to be returned with a parent signature.  Of course, you will receive the usual quarter and semester grades at nine or ten week intervals.  Your grade is strictly objective.  If you earn the points for an A, you will get an A.  Tests and quizzes comprise approximately 80% of your grade, homework makes up the remaining 20%. A student must receive at least 60% of the total possible test points to receive a D in the class!

EXTRA HELP:

Mrs. Howe will be available to individually help any student.  Help can be obtained during most snacks, lunches on even days or tutorial.  COME GET HELP IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND.  When you have an excused absence or when you have tried hard in class and still find the material difficult, come in for extra help.  I love to help sincere students.  Snack and lunch are my personal time, but I am very willing to share it with you in order to improve your math skills.  Get to know your classmates and plan study sessions together.  Mrs. Howe's screen name is "ILoveGiraffesCMH" if you want to contact her at night use AIM.

BEHAVIOR:

Courtesy and respect are expected of all students.  Not only should you and I have a courteous and respectful relationship, but you must also treat each other with kindness when you are in my room.  The classroom is a place for us to grow and learn.  In order to attain this goal, we must feel free to express ideas and ask questions in an accepting atmosphere.  If you insist upon disrupting the educational flow of the classroom, you may be asked to stand outside or be sent to the office.  If any student is caught copying (this includes homework and vocabulary) they will immediately be sent to the principal's office with a referral.  (This includes being caught doing geometry in another teacher's classroom.)

EXPECTATIONS OF THE STUDENTS:

Each student will come to class fully prepared and with the proper tools.

Each student will participate in each lesson.

When the bell rings, students will be quietly seated at their desks with their homework and green pen out, so that they are ready to begin correcting their work.

Students having difficulties will ask questions in and/or outside of the class.

PROCEDURES:

I will be checking your work every time we meet.  All work must be done in pencil, showing all steps, unless other instructions have been given and answers highlighted.  I do not accept late assignments.  This includes late the same day, or even later the same hour.  We will go over questions on your homework after we correct it.  You will be correcting your own papers with a green pen, which I will provide for you. You are expected to write down the correct answers to any problem that you miss.  This way you can go back and try and problem again to see if you truly understand it.  Make sure that you fully understand the assignment so you are ready to go on to the next section.  [Be sure to correct the odd problems at home, the answers are in the back of the book. (Use your green pen!)]

ASK QUESTIONS UNTIL YOU UNDERSTAND

YOU CAN DO THIS!

You can succeed if you are willing to give a 100% effort to better your future.  Every job needs some kind of math.  Persistence is the name of the game in math classes and in life.  Insist upon more explanations if that is what you need.  Demand the best from yourself and you will be amazed at how successful you will become!

CONTACT FROM PARENTS:
