Subtraction: Take out some small items, such as beans or crayons, to use as counters. Ask your child to show you a "group" of the items, such as 7. Then ask them to break the group apart. Example: " Show me seven beans. Take away five beans. How many beans are left in the group?"
The next step is to write a number sentence: 7-5=2 (Remind them to start with the "whole" group or greatest number.)
Ask them comparing questions, such as...
Susan has eight bouncy balls. Sam has three bouncy balls. How many more bouncy balls does Susan have than Sam? Write a number sentence (equation) 8-3=5
