October Newsletter

Wow! It is hard to believe that we have already been in school for a month! We are learning many exciting things in class and will continue to delve into new topics throughout the month of October.

Reading

We are finishing up Theme 1: Being Me. After taking the first theme test, we will move to Theme 2 and begin with the story, The Enormous Turnip. As we move through theme 2, students will continue to work on their fluency and comprehension skills.

Math

We have just begun to explore 2-digit addition with and without regrouping. This can be a challenging topic for students. Please work with your child to continually practice addition and regrouping strategies. We will continue to reinforce this concept throughout the coming weeks. As the month progresses, we will shift our focus to subtraction strategies and 2-digit subtraction with borrowing.

Writing

Students have been busy writing and growing into young authors. Our focus has been on writing expository pieces about Apple Puppets, Ice Cream Sundaes, and Bubbles. Each of these consist of a main idea, at least four supporting sentences, and a concluding sentence. Ask your child to write you a short story in this format or read you one of their finished pieces. As we finish each writing project, students are eager to sit in the Author's Chair and share their writing with classmates.

Science

Students have been hard at work preparing an Amazing Animal book. We have been learning about the different types of animals and their environments and adaptations. Students have been practicing their research skills and gathering information about five different animals of their choice. Look for their completed books soon.

Social Studies

In the second week of October, we will begin our Social Studies unit on map skills. Our students have shown great interest in the map and other parts of our world. This unit should be an exciting journey across the world!

Homework Folders

Homework folders were sent home on Friday, August 24th. Each Friday, students will bring home their folder and return it the following Friday. The folder should include:

  1. The current week's spelling words and worksheet
  2. 1 Language Arts worksheet
  3. 1 Math worksheet
  4. 1 book and Book Report sheet (please keep this sheet until four books have been read).

****Along with homework, this folder will also include important letters from school and graded student work.****
