Week of December 7

Students will read "The Gift of the Magi." We will discuss irony in literature. Later in the week, we will begin reading A Christmas Carol. It will take us through the end of next week. It is in out literature book as a play, so I think the students will enjoy being "actors". The exam for reading will be from this story. Students will also have spelling this week. Spelling will be due on Friday and tested on Friday as well.
In addition to the above named stories, we will do some fun poetry writing using imagery and some reading comprhension skills this week and next.

No spelling this week.
Daily Dose test Wed. The study guide was given to students last week.
This week we will continue to look at an overview of poetry elements. Tuesday, students will learn how to find the rhyme scheme for poems. There will be a short quiz on Wednesday. We will also review figures of speech. Wednesday-Friday will be spent in the computer lab creating PowerPoints showing an understanding of the poetry elements we have discussed.
11/9
Spelling unit 7 this week. Homework due Friday. Students need to do all question sets in book except the thesaurus part at the bottom of one of the pages (sorry, I'm at home without the book so can't give you the actual page number) and the proofreading page. All page numbers are written on the board in class for students.
Students will discuss and look at poetry elements and figurative language this week. We will read a couple short poems and test on them later this week. Next week students will work in pairs to create a PowerPoint presentation which shows their mastery of this lesson. More information and a rubric will be sent home next week.
In language arts, students will work on subject/verb agreement. This is in unit 5 in the language textbook. I will be supplementing the textbook with worksheets and handouts. A quiz will be given either Friday or early next week.

This week students will continue "Three Century Woman" and "Charles." We got behind lat week and did not finish. The test will be Wednesday. Students will start poetry next. There is no spelling this week. In language arts we will continue the study of unit 5 in grammar text book.
Students were given a paper with information on accessing the literature textbook online. Please keep this handy in case your child needs to review a story for a test or catch up due to an absence.

Red Ribbon Week!!!
This week students will read and test on "Three Century Woman." The test will be Friday. Students will also have their first Daily Dose test this week. A study guide will go home Monday. We will continue to work on Unit 5 in the grammar text book.
10/19
Reading: We will work on a study guide for "Retrieved Reformation" Monday and it will be tested on next Tuesday. This story is in the workbook given to each student. Students will do a webquest on the author, O'Henry, in the computer lab possible one day this week. (I was out Thursday and Friday with a sick child, so we didn't get to do this like I had planned. I will try to get to it this week.)
Grammar: We will start the unit on verbs this week. Students will also review subjects, nouns, and types of sentences. Writing exercises.
Spelling: no spelling this week.
10/12.
Reading: We will read "Retrieved Reformation" this week. It will be tested on next Tuesday. This story is in the workbook given to each student. Students will do a webquest on the author, O'Henry, in the computer lab on Friday.
Grammar: This week students will learn the correct format of a friendly letter. Students will write a friendly letter and will test on the 5 parts of a letter. This test will be Thursday. A study guide will be given on Monday. We will also do some creative writing on Monday as a pre-reading exercise for "Retrieved Reformation."
Spelling: Students will do unit 5 spelling this week and test on Friday.

Reading: We will Rikki Tikki Tavi this week. It will be tested on the exam next week. We will also review elements of literature.
Grammar: We will continue to review nouns (unit 3) and subjects/predicates. There will be a test on nouns Tuesday.
No spelling this week.
Exams are next Thursday and Friday!!! Reading exam will cover Rikki Tikki Tavi and elements of literature. Students will receive a study guide. The language arts exams will cover nouns, and sentences - units 1 and 3 in textbook.
9/21
Reading: We will continue to read Tuck Everlasting in class. We will read chapters 18-epilogue this week. Vocab. will be tested on Tuesday and comprehension will be tested Friday.
Spelling: Unit 4. Test Friday.
Grammar: We have finished unit one in the grammar book and some students are still having difficulty with subjects and predicates. We will continue to review this topic as we move on to nouns (unit 3). This unit will take us through the 9 weeks exam which is only two weeks away!
9/14
Reading: We will continue to read Tuck Everlasting in class. We will read chapters 9-18 this week. Vocab. will be tested on Tuesday and comprehension will be tested Friday. I hope to finish the book next week so that we can start some short stories.
Spelling: no spelling this week
Grammar: Con't. compound sentences, fragments and run ons, and punctuating sentences. (pages 10-15 in grammar textbook). We will also continue to review subjects and predicates. A test will be given on Wednesday. The test will covers pages 1-15 in grammar textbook.

Reading: We will continue to read Tuck Everlasting in class. We got behind last week so the chapters 1-8 test will be Thursday.
Spelling: Unit 3 spelling test will be Fri.
Grammar: compound sentences, fragments and run ons, and punctuating sentences. (pages 10-15 in grammar textbook)
Please note: Please check STI. Many students are not turning in homework and are not studying for tests. I am very concerned with grades and need your support.

Reading: This week we will review conflict and point of view. Students will take a test on these Wednesday. We will continue to read Tuck Everlasting in class.
Grammar: Last week I noticed students had trouble identifying helping verbs when picking out the predicate of a sentence. They are going to have a quiz on Thursday which will require them to name the most common helping verbs. These are listed in their workbook on page 9. Monday students will do workbook page 16, Tuesday page 19 with page 20 for homework, and Wednesday and Thursday will be review of everything from pages 9-20. Students will have a grammar test on Friday covering compound subjects and predicates and types of sentences.
Please note: I am noticing a problem with homework not being completed. At most, students have 10 questions for homework and are given time in class to complete it. Please help me with this by checking to be sure it is done. I will start taking grades for homework this week and do not want homework to negatively reflect your child's grade.

Reading: This week we will learn about conflict in literature. Students will test on this next week. We will also read chapters 4-6 of Tuck Everlasting. Students will answer comprehension questions and locate various literary elements.

Reminders: Syllabus and AR parent letter due Wednesday for a grade!
Reading: This week we will discuss elements of fiction. Students will be tested on this information on Friday. We will begin the novel Tuck Everlasting on Wednesday. This book will be read in class.
Language Arts: Students will work in their grammar workbooks daily. This week, we will focus on subjects and predicates. There will be a test on this information on Friday.
Homework: From grammar workbook: Mon. p.2, Tues. p.5, Wed. p. 8, Thurs. study for tests.
