LANGUAGE ARTS SYLLABUS Objectives:
  • To become an active and effective reader with an appreciation of literature
  • To learn literary terms and recognize their use in works of literature
  • To build vocabulary and spelling skills
  • To gain an understanding of figurative and vivid language, creative expression, and word play
  • To improve speaking and listening skills
  • To use critical thinking skills in analyzing and synthesizing literary works
  • To use library and research skills
  • To improve basic grammar, punctuation, and spelling skills
  • To practice the writing process: prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, proofreading, and publishing
  • To perfect essay writing skills
  • To have a successful school year
 Content:Fiction – short stories, novels, drama, poetry; grammar and sentence construction; writing process- narrative, expository, and persuasive writings Requirements:
  • Read all assigned works of literature
  • Be responsible for learning and using new vocabulary words
  • Complete all class work and homework assignments on time
  • Pass quizzes and tests
  • Organize a 3-ring binder and folder
  • Pay attention and participate during class discussions
  • Save all work for end of the year portfolio
  • Keep a class journal for daily writing
 Grading System:Student grades will be based on class participation, class work, homework, tests, quizzes, and projects/writings.  A student with an excused absence is allowed three school days from the day of his/her return to make-up missing work.  It is the student’s responsibility to request make-up work and to return it as arranged.  Below is how my grading will be divided:
  • 60 % = tests, projects, and exams
  • 30% = quizzes
  • 10% = homework and daily grades
*Each student will have to create a portfolio to turn in for a grade at the end of the year.  This portfolio should reflect the student’s comprehension of the different concepts they have learned throughout the year.  Please be saving your student work! Passes:Each student is allowed four hall passes every nine weeks for my class.  Once they have used up their hall passes, they will not be allowed out of the classroom.  If the student does not use all of their passes, they can turn them back in for extra credit pointsJ.Tutoring:Tutoring will be available on Thursdays from 2:30 pm – 3:15 pm.  Please take advantage of this opportunity!  If there is any reason I should not be available one week, I will let the students before hand. Rules/Guidelines:Below are my classroom rules/guidelines.  If a student chooses to not abide by the rules, I will be following the strike system which is explained in the student agenda on page 18. 
  • Follow directions
  • Do not talk without permission
  • Do not talk excessively
  • Use appropriate language
  • Do not argue with the teacher or another student
  • No gum, food, or candy in the classroom
  • No grooming in class
  • Work on given assignment
  • Be prepared for class
  • Be on time to class!!
  • No inappropriate physical contact (including fighting and public display of affection)
  • Do not destroy property
  • Respect your peers
  • Respect your teacher and all authority within the building
  • Do NOT have cell phones/electronic devices visible!!
 Welcome to another school year.  My name is Ms. Williams.  I am looking forward to being your teacher this year.  I am transferring from Newton County where I was teacher and a competition cheerleading coach.  Outside of class, I enjoy taking walks, being outside, working with my youth group, and meeting new people.  Most important, I love to teach and work with students!  I am looking forward to a successful year with each and every one of my students.  I respect others and I expect to be respected.  The rules above are simple and I expect every student to abide by them.  If we all understand this, we will have a wonderful and successful year together!  Please feel free to contact me via email with any questions or concerns.  Welcome to the 8th grade!!
