Sample questions and answers for Section C Paper 2 PMR

Simple/Basic level

Write about a character whom you like. Give evidence from the novel to support your answer.

The Phantom of the Opera

In the novel 'The Phantom of the Opera', the character that I like is Christine Daae. She was hardworking, loyal, unselfish and compassionate.

Christine Daae was poor. Mter the death of her father, she decided to go to Paris to be an opera singer. Christine Daae worked hard to become a prima donna at the Opera House by secretly receiving voice lessons under the guidance of Erik, the phantom. During her performance, Christine attracted the attention of Raoul Vicomte and they both fell in love. Christine Daae was loyal to Raoul Vicomte. She was willing to sacrifice her love and to marry Erik who threatened to kill Raoul in his secret chamber.

Christine Daae also had compassion for Erik. She sympathised with Erik for having an ugly look that caused the society to reject him. She kissed him and agreed to marry him so that Erik, the phantom will let Raoul Vicomte and the Persian be set free.

The Prisoner of Zenda

I like Rudolf Rassendyll in the novel 'The Prisoner of Zenda'. He was loyal, honourable and selfless.

As a visitor to Ruritania, Rudolf Rassendyll showed his loyalty to King Rudolf V. The king had been drugged by his evil brother, Duke Michael who wanted to dethrone him. Rudolf Rassendyll was loyal as he proved his loyalty to the king and country. He impersonated him in order to save the king's throne. Rudolf Rassendyll was in love with Princess Flavia who would become the Queen of Ruritania. Rudolf Rassendyll gave up his love so that she could become the queen. His selfless act should be admired for he was willing to sacrifice his life for the king and the country.

Moderate/Intermediate Level

Write about an interesting event from the novel that you have read. Give evidence from the novel to support your answer.

The Phantom of the Opera

In the novel 'The Phantom of the Opera', I find the event that took place in Chapter 6, 'La Carlotta Sings Margarita' very interesting.

La Carlotta had been cautioned not to sing Margarita on Friday night. She had received a letter of instruction ordering her to stay at home and not to go to the Opera House for accidents might happen. Worst of all, La Carlotta might even lose her voice forever. However, La Carlotta refused to follow the orders.

That night, when La Carlotta went on stage, nothing peculiar happened at first. When she began to sing a beautiful love song, she could not continue. She began to croak which made the audience laughed aloud. She was so ashamed that she never sang again.

The Prisoner of Zenda

In the novel 'The Prisoner of Zenda', an interesting event is when Rudolf Rassendyll met the king of Ruritania, King Rudolf V. They both looked alike.

Rudolf Rassendyll arrived in Ruritania. He stayed at an inn in a quiet spot in Zenda. Rudolf Rassendyll was fond of walking. He decided to take a walk and as the sun became hotter, he turned towards the forest. It is here in the forest that he met King Rudolf V. They looked alike except for Rudolf Rassendyll's beard. Both of them had the same red hair, blue eyes and long nose. Rudolf Rassendyll now understood why the customs officer and Johann, the forest guard looked at him in an astonished manner.

King Rudolf V welcomed Rudolf Rassendyll. The king invited Rudolf Rassendyll to join him for dinner. It was here that the plot of the novel developed with Rudolf Rassendyll impersonating King Rudolf V to save his throne as the king was kidnaped by Duke Micheal.

Difficult/Advanced level

Write about a message for readers from the novel that you have read. Give evidence from the novel to support your answer.

The Phantom of the Opera

In the novel 'The Phantom of the Opera', I have learnt to care about the feelings of others and the welfare of the poor, the disabled and the less fortunate. I must not judge a person by their looks or a book by its cover. I must have compassion for others.

Erik was constantly faced with revulsion as the people rejected him for his ugly, corpse-like look. As such, he nursed bitter feelings towards them and was full of hatred and anger. He became very rebellious and took revenge on those who refused to give in to his demands.

Erik would not have to suffer rejection after rejection if people had not despised and looked down upon him. He would not have turned into a hardened, cruel person. Instead, if people had shown compassion for him, he would have been able to use his talents and genius for the good of the society.

The Prisoner of Zenda

In the novel 'The Prisoner of Zenda', I find the message of honour very appropriate. Rudolf Rassendyll honoured King Rudolf V and was willing to risk his life to save the king and his throne. Rudolf Rassendyll impersonated the king so that Black Michael would not be able to overthrow King Rudolf V when he was drugged by a bottle of wine that had been sent to him.

Rudolf Rassendyll also put honour and duty above love. When he carried out his duty to impersonate the king, he fell in love with Princess Flavia but he felt it was morally right that the king should marry Princess Flavia. He returned the throne to the king and left Ruritania although he loved Princess Flavia very much. He put his honour above his own interests.

Despite the King's weaknesses, the men are even willing to die to save the King and his throne bec they love their King and country more than their lives. It is obvious that the characters in this novel are willing to give up a lot for the sake of what they believe is right.

Hope is a strong theme in the novel The Prisoner of Zenda. Colonel Sapt and Fritz hope that King Rudolf is still safe although he has captured by Duke Michael. When three of the Famous Six come to Strelsau, Sapt and Fritz are full of hope that the King is still alive. Love

In the novel The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux, the theme of love is very evident. Christine and Raoul are good examples. They love each other even though he is a rich nobleman and she is just a poor singer. Christine also understands Erik, who is hurt and full of hate and anger. Christine sees his need for love and is willing to marry Erik, even if he is ugly and frightening. Christine's love finally releases Erik from his anger with the world and he lets her go. Meanwhile, Raoul shows how much he loves Christine when he is willing to endanger his own life in order to save her. We learn that true love should be unconditional.

Or

Hope

In the novel The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux, we can see that Erik, the Opera Ghost, is a person full of hope. He teaches Christine until she becomes a star. He is hopeful that now she will do anything for him and he hopes to marry her. His hopes, however, are shattered when he realizes that Christine and Raoul love each other. Christine has her own hopes-to become a famous singer. She works hard and in the end her hopes become a reality. This shows that if we have hope and work hard we can succeed.
