COURSE:             Language Arts                                              TEACHER: Mr. Schneider

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT:

Note…I follow the handbook for any rules not listed.

1.        Do not talk without permission.  Raise your hand if you have something to say.  When I am talking or I am in the middle of a discussion, you should show respect and listen.

2.        If your work is handed in late, major points will be deducted.  I will deduct a letter grade for each day your assignment is late.  Once the last bell of the day rings on day four and I still have not received the assignment, it will be recorded as a zero.  Homework assignments are never a surprise.  When I give you a due date for an assignment, write it down in your planner so you do not forget when it is due.

3.       Do not cheat, lie, or steal; it will be nearly impossible for you to regain my respect.

4.       Respect others as you would like to be respected.  Respect the fact that your class is not over until the bell rings.  If you line up at the door or you are out of your seat when the dismissal bell rings, you will be the last to leave.

5.       Do not leave my room a mess.  Put materials back where you found them, and clean up the floor around your desk area.

6.       Participation is required.  I note who participates and who slouches and drifts off in their desks.  I take this into consideration when final grades are due.  Points will NEVER be deducted, but no points will be rewarded if you are inattentive.  If caught sleeping or having your head resting on your desk so that it appears that you are sleeping, you will serve a detention with me.

7.       Progress reports will be handed out every Thursday.  If you cannot wait until Thursday, only ask about your grade before or after school.

8.       I have three desks.  You are not to be behind any of my desks unless I am sitting in my chair.  If you need something in my room, raise your hand and I will more than likely grant you permission to get what you need.  Please ask permission to leave your seat.  I do not want you roaming the room for any reason.

9.       Be on time and bring all necessary materials.  You only have THREE MINUTES during each passing period.  Sharpen your pencils before class begins.  You may only drink water in my class; no food or drink of any kind is permitted.  I will generally give you a tardy if you need to use the restroom; take care of that before class.  If you are not in your correct seat when the bell rings, you are tardy.  DO NOT let me see MP3 players, I-Pods, or cell phones!!  They will be confiscated and turned in to the office.

10.     The dress code will be followed at all times.

CLASS MATERIALS:  All materials MUST be brought to class each day.  Collateral will be collected for what you failed to bring.  When my property is returned, your property will be returned.  As the year progresses and you are habitually ill-prepared, I will not provide you with the necessary materials.  In short, please be responsible and come prepared to learn.  If you have nothing to trade, I will not supply you with the following essentials…

  • Textbook
  • A notebook of paper
  • A pencil and a blue/black ink pen
  • Your binder
  • An agenda book

ATTENDANCE:  Daily attendance is extremely important.  Missing just one day of class is ill-advised, but students should have phone numbers of other students in the class so they can call to receive information on what was missed.  Students may call or e-mail me when absent, or view my website for assignments.  Official school policy on attendance and tardiness will be adhered to as stated in the student handbook.

MAKE-UP PROCEDURES:  In the case of an unexcused absence, a grade of zero will be recorded in the grade book.  If your absence is excused, the work can be made up on your own time (before/after school or during advisory).  Make sure your guardian calls the school when you plan on being absent.  You will be given the same amount of time to complete an assignment as those students who were present the day the assignment was given.  For every additional day the assignment is not turned in, you will be docked a letter grade.  After the fourth day the assignment is not turned in, don’t bother, for the assignment will result in a zero.  Obviously, procrastination will hurt your grade!

TESTS/QUIZZES:  The students will take a test after a literary unit is complete, typically every two to three weeks.  Tests are announced approximately a week in advance, but quizzes may be unannounced.  Tests are always worth 100 points, while quizzes can range from 10 points to 50 points.  If absent on a quiz/test day (and excused), you are required to make up that work on the day you return to class (typically before or after school or during advisory).

HOMEWORK:  Daily homework assignments will be given out during class and will also be available on my website.  You will be required to write down what is on my dry-erase board DAILY in your agenda books.  Homework will be handed in directly to me; it is late once I say “last call for homework.”  For every additional day the assignment is not turned in, you will be docked a letter grade.  After the fourth day the assignment is not turned in, don’t bother, for the assignment will result in a zero.  Every three weeks, I will check your binders for old assignments.  They must be in order from the date they were assigned, so DATE EVERYTHING!  Save ALL of your work.  If you throw something away or fail to complete an assignment, it will affect your binder grade.  Binder checks are always worth 50 points and involve 10 items.  If one item is missing, you are dropped a letter grade (keep up with recording items in the agenda book; they may be part of a binder check).  Stay organized and keep up with your work.

EXTRA HELP:   My room is located on the second floor, room 211.  I am available before school from 6:30 to 8:15, and after school from 2:50 to 3:20 (later if necessary).  You can call me at 876-7010 Ext. 4211 or e-mail me at eschneider@madison.k12.il.us as well.  You are encouraged to visit www.schoolrack.com/eschneider for assignments.  All parents should feel free to contact me in both positive and negative conferences.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:  Students are expected to follow the rules and guidelines specified in the Madison Accelerated High School Handbook.  If a student has any special needs in terms of seating, etc., he/she should immediately advise me of the situation.

I teach to help students become better readers and writers.  Additionally, I am employed in the district to encourage students how to become responsible young adults.  If you work with me, things will run smoothly and you will enjoy your learning experience in my English class.
