Modernism Values - 1915-1945 American Dream-- These writers explored the realization or elusiveness of the American dream: owning a home, family, material success, etc. Focus on the future-- No longer trusting the ideas and values of the world out of which war and depression developed, people looked to the future for something better. Glorifying the common man-- People recognized the courage and uniqueness of each and every person regardless of one’s place in society. Uncertainty of life-- Several years of war followed by prosperity only to be followed by yet another war left people without a sense of security concerning their future. Feelings of uncertainty, disjointedness and disillusionment prevailed.
