The student will demonstrate the ability to express orally AND defend in writing personal understanding of reading materials, using appropriate texual evidence to support personal ideas.
The student will demonstrate the ability to understand and apply strategies to increase word knowledge. (Some strategies include use of context clues, synonyms/antonyms, roots/prefixes/suffixes. Also, distinguishing between literal and figurative use of words and phrases, and connotations and denotations of words.)
The student will demonstrate the ability to read a variety of texts for personal and academic purposes. (Howard County's expectation is that students read 25 books per school year, consisting of school-assigned books and personal choice books combined.)
The student will demonstrate the ability to link information literacy to everyday life situations and academic assignments.
The student will demonstrate the ability to investigate the world of work in relation to knowledge of self and his or her community (Careers Unit).
