Ongoing Course Goals

  • The student will demonstrate the ability to express orally AND defend in writing personal understanding of reading materials, using appropriate texual evidence to support personal ideas.
  • The student will demonstrate the ability to understand and apply strategies to increase word knowledge. (Some strategies include use of context clues, synonyms/antonyms, roots/prefixes/suffixes. Also, distinguishing between literal and figurative use of words and phrases, and connotations and denotations of words.)
  • The student will demonstrate the ability to read a variety of texts for personal and academic purposes.  (Howard County's expectation is that students read 25 books per school year, consisting of school-assigned books and personal choice books combined.)
  • The student will demonstrate the ability to link information literacy to everyday life situations and academic assignments.
  • The student will demonstrate the ability to investigate the world of work in relation to knowledge of self and his or her community (Careers Unit).
