Dear Parents,

Welcome to first grade at David Lawrence Jr. K-8 Center!  I look forward to having your child in my class for the 2009-2010 school year.  I expect it to be a productive and exciting time for your child as we embark on a wonderful, educational journey through first grade.  Please make sure that you read all of the information provided so that your child’s time in first grade will be both beneficial and fun.

Arrival/Dismissal

All first grade students should report to the hallway outside their classroom in the morning.  This is where I will pick them up at 8:20am.

Dismissal will be at 2:00pm each day!  Parents picking up students should do so in the designated parent pick-up area in the front of the school.  Please remember to write your child’s name on the red paper that was given to you.  Please place this paper on the dashboard where it is easily visible.  Please be on time.  If you need to pick up your child earlier than 1:50, you must go to the office and request his/her release.  Identification is required for the release of a student.  Teachers are not allowed to dismiss students any earlier than the designated dismissal time without a pass from the office.  If there is a change in how your child will go home, please inform the teacher in writing.

Supplies

Please see attached list for the supplies your child needs.

Class Rules

Each child is expected to learn and follow the class rules and procedures.  Each day your child will receive a behavior comment in their school agenda, please check the agenda for this information as well as for home learning assignments and other classroom news.  Students who receive happy comments will have the opportunity to go to the treasure chest for a reward.

Home Learning

Your child will receive homework on a daily basis.  Please complete all home learning assignments and return them to school the following day.  Home learning includes reading with your child for at least 30 minutes every night.  Please list the name of the book on the Reading Log and sign on the designated line each day.  Reading Logs will be given out on Monday and need to be returned the following Monday.  Reading can include poems, short stories, newspaper articles, kid’s magazines, etc..

Home learning includes work which reinforces the skills being taught in class.  Home learning is part of your child’s grade and it is important that he/she complete it on their own (with your help if necessary) and brings it back to school the following day.

Other Important Information

If you would like to volunteer, let the office personnel know so that they may direct you on how to do so.
