Second Grade Weekly Spelling Homework

All spelling homework should be completed in the Word Study Notebook.

Monday:            Students will sort spelling words into proper word families.  (Don’t forget to mix up the words!)  Students need to explain the patterns to a parent.  Example, “oddball” words such as “was” do not fit the “short a” sound pattern.  Students should put the cut-outs back into their baggie with their names on it to use throughout the week.  Then students should copy the words they sorted into their Spelling Notebooks.  Remember to put the date at the top of the page!

Tuesday: Students take home their spelling words bag and sort the words again.  Have the student say the words out loud as they sort.  Students then choose ten of their spelling words to write in complete sentences in their Spelling Notebooks.  Please use your best handwriting and make sure the sentences are at least 6 words long.  Please underline the spelling word used in each sentence.

Wednesday: Students will do a SAW activity with their spelling words.  SAW means Sort, Alphabetize, and Write spelling words into the Spelling Notebooks.  Students will write the words in their Spelling Notebooks in ABC order.  They should keep them in the columns of the word patterns.  For example, one week the list might be “short a”, “short e” and “oddball” words so the students will have three columns of words in ABC order.

Thursday: Students do a blind sort.  Students make the correct number of columns for the word categories.  Parents call out words and students sort spelling words from memory.  Parents, please circle mistakes in pen and have your child make any corrections in spelling and sorting.  Study for the test on Friday.  Students need to know how to spell the words as well as to which word family they belong; i.e.—which category, such as “short a.”

Friday:           Test
