Unit 3: Jesus Gives Us the Gift of Peace
Goals
- The children will be grateful for God's loving mercy in giving us the gift of the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Penance).
- They will know how to celebrate this sacrament and express a desire to do so.
Chapter 9: Our Friend Jesus Forgives Us
Jesus' words and example show us that God is always reaching out to offer us forgiveness and peace. The children reflect on the way Jesus lovingly welcomed Zacchaeus and the sinful woman. They hear Jesus speak of God's joyful acceptance of our prayers for forgiveness.
Chapter 10: Jesus Leads Us to His Peace
Jesus sends us the Holy Spirit to help us to be, through mutual forgiveness, a community of peace. Sin is explained as saying no to God, who asks us to love and serve him and others. The children learn that in the Sacrament of Reconciliation Jesus gives us a sign of his divine forgiveness and the strength to grow in his love.
Chapter 11: The Holy Spirit Helps Us
The Holy Spirit is with us always to help us see ourselves as we are before God. In this chapter the children learn how they can become more aware of the role the Holy Spirit plays within them and how they can be filled with the Spirit's love, peace, and joy.
Chapter 12: We Meet Jesus in the Sacrament of Reconciliation
In the Sacrament of Reconciliation, God's forgiving love reaches out to us through the ministry of the Church. The children learn that God forgives us whenever we confess our sins in sorrow and show our desire to live more faithfully according to the teachings and example of Jesus and the teachings of the Church.
Chapter 13: We Become Better Persons
Gratitude for God's forgiving love prompts us to give praise and thanks and to share God's peace and forgiving love with others. The children learn about the sacrament as a sign of God's forgiveness and are encouraged to take the initiative in showing their love by acts of penance.
Chapter 14: Jesus Calls Us His Friends
A celebration of reconciliation enables the children to experience the healing power of God's forgiveness and love. The celebration summarizes what the children have learned and helps them and their families acquire a deeper understanding and appreciation of their responsibility to share Christ's forgiving love with others.
