 Participation in Government (20 weeks)

As seniors, you are either eligible or about to be eligible to participate in the political process. We will be examining the importance of individual involvement, and discussing the question of whether your voice can be heard in the modern American democracy.

Issues that we will consider include:

  • Our obligations as citizens: What do we have to do?
  • Our role as citizens in the political process: What can we do?
  • Voting and representative democracy: Does our vote count?
  • Elections: candidates, platforms and the media: How do we make informed decisions?
  • The structure of the federal system: How does it relate to our lives?
  • The Bill of Rights and the Supreme Court: What are our rights, and do they change over time?
  • New York State Government from its beginnings to the present: How does our state and local government function, and what can we do about it?
  • Writing laws and public policy: How do ideas become laws?

 Economics (20 Weeks)

Some of the most important decisions we make during the course of our lives are economic. We can rarely have all of the things we want, and therefore we have to make choices. These choices affect our present and our future. Our government makes economic choices on our behalf which affect our lives as citizens, on the state, national, and international level.

Issues that we will consider include:

  • Supply and Demand: What determines the price of a product?
  • Credit: How do we get things we can’t afford yet?
  • Saving: What’s the advantage of saving when we’re young?
  • TheU.S.Economy: Why is gas more expensive? What does a cheaper dollar mean to us and the price of things? Are we still in a recession?
  • Taxation: Is it fair? What could make it fairer?
  • The Federal Government: How much should the government be involved in theU.S.economy?
  • What should we do about the National Debt?
