Research Project

Final Research Project

This project will account for 20% of your final grade for this class.

It is due on Monday, June 11, 2012.

Task: You  will conduct detailed research on a topic of your choice from European history that answers an open ended question that you will come up with.

Example: Is the Black Legend (the historical view that the Spanish were more ruthless exploiters of the indigenous population of the Western hemisphere than other colonizing nations such as England) justified?

Sources: You will use at least 5 secondary sources including The Western Heritage, including one printed book, on the history of your topic. You will use at least 4 primary sources which will be additional evidence for the overall thesis.

Your sources will be cited in MLA format (see packet on how to use).

Format: This is up to you. There are many options, from video documentary, to a research paper.

  • Research paper: 8-10 pages,  Times New Roman, 12 point font.

  • Video documentary accompanied by a written reflection on the process of making the documentary, detailing the strengths and weaknesses of the format for research.

  • Illustrated magazine article on your topic, with annotated images detailing their significance to your topic. 6-8 pages.

  • Design a website on your topic, with a detailed analysis of your subject written by you. Include primary sources, suggested links for more information, and well chosen images and formatting which encourages others to benefit from your research.

  • Format suggested by you and approved by me. If you have a particular idea, come and talk to me about it.

AP European History

Mr. Whittaker, H7.

dwhittak@webutuckschools.org

Welcome to AP European History. This class is designed as a college level introduction to Modern European History, c. 1400 to the present. The course helps to explain the roots of some of the issues that the modern European Union is having in the present! There will be a concentration on primary source documents, which are the building blocks of history. Examples might include an eyewitness account of the devastation of the Plague, or the minutes of a meeting inGermanythat decided the fate of many European Jews during World War 2. The primary goals are to explore the fascinating and often brutal emergence of nation states in Europe as competing world powers (and their subsequent decline), and to score a “3” or higher on the AP European History Exam in May 2012.

The units include:

    Europe in transition: 1300-1750

  • Late Middle Ages, Renaissance, Reformation, Religious Wars, Absolutism
