Homework
When a student has mastered a specific speech goal to a level of at least 80% accuracy, I may send home an assignment. A homework assignment may be in the form of a worksheet or handwritten and will include specific instructions. Generally, a homework assignment should be carried out daily for one calendar week before it is returned to me.
Speech is a complex motor skill. As with all motor skills, practice facilitates mastery. Home practice and reinforcement is critical for achievement of carryover of learned speech skills to environments outside of therapy, i.e. the educational setting. Regardless of specific homework assignments, please reinforce skills through deliberate, continual correction of your child's misarticulations, utilizing both auditory and visual modeling, on a daily basis. Praise your child for taking responsibility and being accountable for improving upon his/her speech and communication skills. Successful therapy is in no way a passive process.
