General Information: Grading

I want to take a minute to explain our grading system for art.  Kindergarten is graded differently than first through fifth.  Everyone recieves a productivity grade in art.  This measures work habits such as listening skills, staying on task, and following directions.  First through fifth students also recieve an achievement grade at the end of each trimester.  First trimester we focus on student's media  skills.  Media skills simply means how well they control the art materials, a cornerstone to all success in art.  Second trimester we look more closely at their ability to effectively use the fundamental concepts of art like form, color, line, shape, depth and unity to name a few.  Third trimester we assess them on how well they develop their subject.  This would include effective use of detail or creative problem solving.

I grade a portfolio of work, therefore you first though third graders will not be bringing home any projects until the end of each unit.  Fourth and fifth graders are graded at the end of the trimester.   I do this,  because  I find that I am able to better track growth when I look at a group of projects.

Please keep in mind that I am not grading "art talent".  Most children can be  successful in art if they apply themselves and are able to listen to and follow directions.  Please remember that a #3 or a B is an very respectable grade.  In order to recieve a 4 or an A, a student needs to exceed expectations, in other words, do more that the minimum requirements.  I consider myself a generous grader, but some projects  are more inspiring that others.  Some children are more inspired some days.  Keep in mind,  Michangelo had bad days too.
