Course 2: Spelling • Back To Sections »

Spelling Begins With Letters And Sounds

During the first six-weeds we will review the letters and the sounds they make.  We will also be writing words and seeing that words are everywhere.  Remember that spelling is inventive at the first grade stage.  It also takes persistance to become a good speller.  Phonetic spelling is important but doesn't always work.  Some words just have to be memorized.  The more a student writes and corrects their writing the better speller they will become.

What To Expect After The First Four Weeks Of School

At the beginning of the fouth week of school we will begin having spelling tests.  Spelling words will be sent home each Monday.  The students will have a practice test on Wednesday.  On Friday, they will have a written test and a fill in bubble test where they will have to bubble-in the correct answer.  Types of bubble tests will be, picking words spelled right, picking words spelled wrong, or picking if the word is spelled right or wrong.
