What's Going On In Reading
During the first two to three weeks of school we will be reviewing the alpahabet by studying a letter or letters a day. We will also be going over High Frequency Words, (HFW), each day. These words are basic sight words that make help make up sentences and your child should begin to recognize them quickly. These HFW will be put on a word wall so that your child will see them daily.
After this review, we will begin our reading series by Scott Forsman. There are 5 reading books we cover for the remaining school year. Each reading book is used for six weeks. During those six weeks your child will be learning vocabulary, phonics, and comprehension skills.
REMEMBER, reading is a process. Some children learn quickly and some children take more time to learn. It does require lots of practice for all students.
Anything done well takes effort.
Weekly Reading Schedule/What To Expect
When we begin working in our reading series, below is a schedule of what your child will be doing each day of the week and what you need to look for at home to help them.
This schedule will help you know what we are doing each day and what your child will be bringing home each afternoon. (On short weeks we may be testing, catching up, or squeezing 5 days of work into 3 or 4 days. All of this will depend on where we are when a short week occurs.)
Monday – We will begin our theme for the week. Vocabulary and phonics skills will be introduced. Your child will be bringing home a word card bag with words to study for the week. (The empty word card bag should be returned on Tuesday.) Your child will be tested over these words on Friday. These words are not spelling words, they will come separately. The reading words should be studied enough so that your child can recognize them in any sentence. A take-home reader will come home to be read by your child and be signed by you. I will be checking for it on Tuesday.
Tuesday – Your child will need to bring back the take-home book and the empty word card bag (we will use it again next week). A second take home reader will be sent home to be read by your child and be signed by you. I will be checking for it on Wednesday.
Wednesday – The take home book will need to be returned to school. Your child will bring home their reading book to read the weeks reading stories. The reading book should be returned with the note signed. The student should keeping studying their reading vocabulary words and spelling words. The practice spelling test will be taken at school today.
Thursday – The reading textbook and note will need to be returned to school. At school we will be rereading the weekly stories and reviewing all skills for the week. Keep studing all spelling words for the spelling test on Friday.
Friday - . All wind up activities will be done at school. The week’s vocabulary words will be tested as well as comprehension on the story of the week. No homework for the weekend.
These activities should only take about 15 to 20 minutes a night to do. The time you invest will reap huge reading rewards for your child by the end of the school year.
Remember it is easier to work a little each night than to try to cram an hour session in one night.
Thank you, Ms. Timberly
