Policies and Procedures

Dear Parents/Guardians and Students,

Welcome to fifth grade!  We are looking forward to a fun and successful year.  We would like to take this opportunity to share with you our policies/procedures for the 2011-2012 school year.

 Homework Policy

Homework for the subjects of Science, Social Studies, Reading, Language Arts and Math will be due as stated on the homework sheet for the week.  Incomplete classwork may be sent home as homework and is due back the next day.  In addition students should study their vocabulary/spelling words each night as we will have a test every Friday.

Late Homework will be accepted for a deduction of 10 points per day.  If an assignment is more than 3 days late the student will not receive a grade above 70%.

Of course if there is an emergency or a student is absent they will be given additional time but the key here is communication.

Homework is an essential activity in the learning experience and constitutes a significant part of the student's grade.  Students are required to complete all homework assignments on or before the date due.  Remember parents, YOU are the  KEY to your child's success, teachers can only help them turn it.

 Grading Scale

 Behavior Expectations

It is our expectation that students will demonstrate respect for themselves, their peers, and all members of the West Elementary School staff.  We consider all behaviors a student choice.  Therefore positive choices will be rewarded and negative choices will be handled in the following manner:

Parent Phone Call

Office Referral

Please take a moment to review with your 5th grader the Gulfport School Expectations as published in the student handbook, as well as the classroom management system (Ticket System, Binder Behavior Report) we discussed in class.

 Attendance/Tardy Policy

Regular attendance is a key component of academic success.  Therefore, it is extremely important that your child be on time and in attendance daily.  If you know in advance that your child will be absent for an extended period of time, please provide me with at least 1 weeks notice so that materials can be prepared.

Tardy

If your child arrives after 7:30 a.m., he/she is to report to the office for an admittance slip before proceeding to class.

 Textbook Policy

Your child will be assigned a set of textbook for this school year.  If the textbooks are lost or damaged you will be financially responsible.

 Teacher Communication Policy

Communication through email and notes in the Binder is always welcome.  For those occasions when you feel a phone call is necessary, please observe the following times:
