Welcome to Mrs. Clarkson's School Counseling Website

Hello,

Welcome. It is very nice of you to stop by my website!  The Grasso Tech School Counseling staff is ready to support our students’ high school years with the following program of services:

DEVELOPMENTAL COUNSELING– which includes sequentially presented activities and lessons that assist all students with the stages of growth, and help them to understand themselves and others. The goal is to foster wellness and promote educational excellence by offering appropriately timed instruction.

ACADEMIC PLANNING - Includes the selection of a plan of study, placement into appropriate courses and trade program, attendance improvement, study skills development.

PERSONAL/SOCIAL GROWTH - Includes individual and group counseling concerning self-understanding, personal responsibility decision-making, and positive coping skills.

CAREER/LIFE PLANNING- Includes career development which can prepare students for the transition from school to college. The work settings of today and tomorrow require that students be prepared with an understanding that they will be faced with challenges and changes that require them to learn and to adapt. One of the learning objectives a student must have is knowledge of where to seek resources that will provide the information, emotional health support, continuing education, and job training that will assist in their ability to adapt.

PARENTS:

Would you please take a look at the Staff Directory in the "Quick Links" of the Grasso Tech website:  www.cttech.org/grasso? You may make direct contact with your child's teachers by phone or by email. Many teachers have their own websites, too. You may check on your child's progress by linking to the Parent/Student Portal that is shown on the the Grasso home page.  If you have misplaced your user name and password, please contact your child's counselor or the guidance office. Counselors and Guidance staff would be happy to help you with this. You may call 860-441-0318 for help. Yes, your daughter or son probably does have homework to do!

STUDENTS:

Learning is fun! It keeps us on our toes and makes life very interesting. If you will look at learning as an inspiring challenge, and enjoy each step toward mastering yourself and your subjects, you will be more likely to enjoy your high school years.

This is the truth as I know it: the more you give, the more you receive.

It is time to learn. Learn to study, in earnest, and to build your academic foundation. If you apply sustained effort on the assigned tasks, and complete and submit your work on time, your grades will be a positive reflection of that.

Take charge of your learning. Go ahead and find out more about your subject by doing independent research that will broaden your knowledge base. This will increase your interest and impress your teachers. Practice the important skills you learn in the trade area that you have selected. Follow these suggestions and you will be likely to find success in the school and work based settings you enter in the future.

Here are some quick study tips to prepare you for high school success:

1. Get 8 to 9 hours of sleep (but not in class...)

2. Study 50 minutes; take a break for 10 minutes, study 50 minutes, etc.

3. Design a weekly study schedule

4. Pay attention to deadlines

5. Mark the date of every test on your calendar

6. Review your notes after lectures (within 24 hours)

7. Prioritize what you really need to do, and learn to say no to distractions

8. Discover the best time and place to study(quiet, well lit, a table for writing or keyboarding, and the best time of day for alertness). Study daily.

9. Don't be afraid to ask for help. Talk to your instructors, counselor, or get a tutor. Use our wonderful Access Period as time to get clarification on an assignment or new learning.

10. Get perfect attendance.  The closer you come to this goal, the more you will learn!

I sincerely hope these tips are helpful to you, and that you will enjoy happy and successful year at GrassoTech.  The links to this website will provide a lot of information about important high school topics. I hope you will visit them soon.

Wishing you all the best,

Mrs. Deborah Clarkson
