COURSE DESCRIPTION

Business Technology Essentials is a one-credit course designed to teach students touch keyboarding on the alphanumeric keyboard and the numeric keypad.  Students will also master basic skills in the areas of word processing, database management, spreadsheet, presentation, Internet, and E-mail. Students are also offered opportunities to identify ethical issues pertaining to information systems and to gather information about careers in technology. 
FEE: $25.00
 Future Business Leaders of America-Phi Beta Lambda (FBLA-PBL) and the Association for Marketing Students (DECA) are co-curricular components of the Business/Marketing program.  Both student organizations enhance classroom instruction, develop leadership skills, and provide opportunities for professional growth and service.

INSTRUCTIONAL PHILOSOPHY

Students will be expected to meet all the course goals and objectives listed below and demonstrate their understanding of the underlying concepts.  Business Technology Essentials will be taught using lecture, demonstration, hands-on activities, and projects. 

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES*

After the successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:1.       Identify and use appropriate hardware and software.  2.       Use the touch-method of keying with minimum proficiency.3.       Identify key vocabulary terms and use them effectively.4.       Produce acceptable (mailable) business correspondence. 5.       Effectively use word-processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and database software.6.       Use telecommunications effectively such as the Internet and electronic mail.  7.       Identify ethical issues pertaining to information systems.8.       Describe careers available within the technology area.

GRADING PROCEDURES

Student attendance is very important since class work is graded daily.  Daily class work assessment will be based on student participation and individual completion of assignments and projects.  Test assessment will consist of objective and production-based testing.   Daily Assignments and Participation       60%Test/Quizzes                                         30%Professional Development (FBLA)         10% 

CHEATING

I have absolutely no tolerance for cheating.  If you are caught cheating, the assignment/test will be given the grade of a zero.  This includes talking during a test and copying documents from one disk or computer to another.   

MAKE UP WORK

Make up work is the responsibility of each student, and the guidelines in the Student Handbook are strictly enforced.  Students may receive a pass to come before school to make up any missed assignments.      

DISCIPLINE PLAN

The Jefferson County School System’s Student Code of Conduct and Rudd Middle School Rules will be the guide for student conduct in this class.  If a student is displaying inappropriate behavior disciplinary action will be taken.

COMPUTER LAB RULES

 

1.       All assignments are to be done at school!  NOT AT HOME!

2.       Come to class prepared everyday.  Bring your folder and a pen or pencil.  3.       Absolutely no gum, candy items, food, or drinks are allowed in the computer lab.4.       Turn in all assignments on time and in your correct slot.  5.       Come to class and get logged on immediately so that you will be ready to key.6.       DO NOT write on the desk, books or mouse pad.7.       Please take notes in class and ask questions if you do not understand.8.       DO NOT play with the computers.  They are extremely expensive. 9.       There will be a seating chart.  Do not switch seats without my approval.10.   Printing any assignments other than school assignments is prohibited.11.   DO NOT download any extra programs to the computer.  Do not play Internet games or listen to Internet music.12.   DO NOT visit any Internet sites without my approval.13.   Please leave the lab the way you found it.  Do not make any adjustments to the monitor or printer without permission.
