In order to focus on student success, provide quality instruction, and communicate openly and honestly with students and parents, I will publish a course syllabus (based on state and district curriculum frameworks) for each term. Reteaching, remediation, and enrichment will occur based on results of weekly and district mixed practice tests and to deepen knowledge and understanding. Ultimately, students must take responsibility for their own learning.
Homework/Assignments/Projects: Homework is due the following day for which it was assigned. Any assignments or projects are expected to be completed by the posted due date. Only students who were absent are provided extra time in order to complete coursework. Reading outside of class is expected and strongly encouraged. Reading outside of the classroom will be assigned throughout the year as homework. Quizzes for these reading assignments may be given at any time. There are no at-home projects for quarter one.
Requirements: Students are expected to complete all assignments in the prescribed manner. Furthermore, students are expected to study regularly and come to class prepared to work. This means that a pencil, erasable pen, paper, assignments, and positive attitude are required on a daily basis. Disruptions to the learning process will not be tolerated.
Tests: Testing will occur weekly. Our weekly English test will be given EVERY Tuesday. The weekly mixed practice test will be given based on the reading and language curriculum. These tests will be comprised mainly of multiple choice questions but may also include open-ended responses (the student must answer in written form). These tests will include newly taught skills as well as previously taught skills (from any grade level).
Class Binder: You will need a 1 to 1½ inch binder for this class. This binder should have five dividers labeled for: Bell Ringers, Reading, Language, Writing, and Vocabulary. Please ensure that you always have notebook paper and an erasable pen or pencil.
Extra Credit: I do not give extra credit as a general rule. I may offer an opportunity to the entire class, but this would be at my discretion. Please always do your best and study. Do not rely on extra credit.
Student Progress Report: I will send home a progress report with your child every other week. This progress report is to be signed and returned so that I know you have seen it and are aware of your child’s current grade. There should never be a point in time that you are not aware of your child’s current English grade. Ask your child to see his/her progress report. Grades can sometimes change very quickly. Please check your child’s school progress weekly through the district’s Parent Center.
