Friday, November 21st

Key Topics Covered In Class:  Today we had a lesson on 4.8: Compounding Continuously.  We were able to get through the entire presentation.  A copy can be found here:  4.8 PPT (notes attached).ppt.  The focus of our discussion was on the difference between nominal and effective interest rates and how to compute continuous interest versus non-continuous interest. 

Students were given the last 30 minutes of class to work on the 4.8 homework.

  • Test Tuesday, 4.4 - 4.8

Thursday, November 20th

Key Topics Covered In Class:  Today was a day to work on 4.7.  We had a lesson to reinforce/refresh the reading from Monday.  A copy of the ppt with my notes can be found here: 4.7 PPT (notes attached).ppt.  The focus of our discussion centered around the equation b = e^k, to convert from non-continuous to continuous growth. 

Students also received an answer key for the 4.7 homework assignment which was assigned on Monday.  A copy of that key can be found here:  4.7 HW Solutions.doc

We ended class by working on 4.7 #19 and 20.

  • 4.7: p. 151, #19,20,24
  • Test next week (Tuesday most likely) on 4.4 - 4.8

Wednesday, November 19th

Key Topics Covered In Class:  Today we opened class with a quizzle while I checked in the homework from the last two days.  This took quite a bit of time.  We then reviewed answsers from the remaining 4.6 problems and moved on to review the 4.7 answers.  We will have a conceptual discussion tomorrow on the meaning of continuous growth.

Tuesday, November 18th

Key Topics Covered In Class:  I was out sick again today.  The assignment was as follows:  Chapter 4 Review Problems: p. 171 - 175, #1, 4, 6, 8-17all, 19- 22all, 26 - 28all, 30, 37

Homework:

  • make sure that all assignments from the last two days are complete for tomorrow

Monday, November 17th

Key Topics Covered In Class:  Today I was out sick.  Students were given the following assignments to work on with each other and with the sub:

1.  read textbook, 4.6: p. 143 - 144

2.  complete text, p. 144 - 146, #12, 14, 16, 17, 18, 20

3.  read textbook, 4.7: p. 147 - 151 

4.  complete text: p. 151, #1 - 11 odds, 17, 18

Homework:

  • make sure that the above assignments are done for tomorrow

Friday, November 14th

Key Topics Covered In Class:  Today students took part 2 of the 4.5 - 4.6 quiz.  They were able to take 60 minutes for this portion of the assessment.  With the remaining 15 minutes of class, we then applied logs to solving problems about acidity and pH.  Please see specifically slides #13 - 16  from the 4.6 presentation:  4.6 PPT (notes attached).ppt.

Homework:

  • 4.6: p.144, #22 & 24
  • Test end of next week on 4.5 - 4.8

Thursday, November 13th

Key Topics Covered In Class:  We opened class with a very brief review of 4.4 - 4.6.  Students then took part 1 of the quiz from 4.4 - 4.6.  Today's portion was the non-calculator part.  Students were given 60 minutes for this part of the quiz.

After the quiz, we went over the remaining 5 problems from the practice quiz using a powerpoint file.  The solutions to #8 - 12 can be found here: 4.5 - 4.6 Practice Quiz (Answer Key).ppt

Homework:

  • Study for part 2 of the 4.4 - 4.6 quiz (calculator permitted part)

Wednesday, November 12th

Key Topics Covered In Class:  Today we opened by working on a practice quiz to help us prepare for the upcoming quiz on 4.4 (Lns) - 4.6.  A copy of the quiz with answers (but not necessarily all steps provided) can be found here:  4.5 - 4.6 QUIZ (Answers Attached).doc

We also spent quite a bit of time going over the homework from the weekend (4.6 Part 1).  Answers were written on the board (Block A) and read aloud (Block D) and students were able to request that certain problems be done in more detail.  Volunteers were selected to write detailed solutions on the board and these were thoroughly reviewed as a class.

  • Study for 4.4 - 4.6 Quiz (either tomorrow or Friday)

Friday, November 7th

Key Topics Covered In Class:  We opened class with a quizzle while last night's homework was checked.  Homework answers were then written on the board and students were able to self-correct their assignments.  We focused our discussion on how to find domain and range straight from a function and how that can help us identify our asymptotes.  There were few questions on this assignment.

We then moved on to 4.6: Logs & Exponential Models.  We were able to get through the first 12 slides in a twenty-minute period.  We will finish this section on Wednesday.  A copy of the presentation (my notes attached) can be found here:  4.6 PPT (notes attached).ppt.

  • 4.6: p. 144, #1 - 6, 8, 10
  • Quiz either Thursday 11/13 or Friday 11/14 on 4.4 - 4.6.
