Welcome Back to LEAP!

Welcome back to the Sherman School and the LEAP program for the 2010-2011 school year!  I am excited to see all of you in class and look forward to working with you as we gear up for some new and unique challenges.  As always, you will utilize your multiple intelligences to plan, create, analyze, and evaluate problems that not only enrich subjects studied presently, but ones that also elongate yours and your peers personal interests.  I encourage you and your parents/guardians to check the website for updates.

Current Work

 8th Grade:

Eighth graders are participating in the CT Mock Trial competition.  Students are working as a team to analyze a criminial case.  Through this process, they are learning how a trial is conducted, the various roles and responsibilities of attorneys, bailiffs, judges, and witnesses.  We are looking for a community volunteer with experience in law to come share their professional expertise with us.  If you are interested, please contact Mrs. Carlson at carlsone@shermanschool.com.

5th - 7th Grade:

Students are creating Independent/Small Group Study Projects.  The goal of this project is for students to design a project based on their personal interests.  To begin, students participated in a personal evaluation of their likes and dislikes as well as an academic learning style inventory.  With this data, students narrowed their interests to three topics, which they then used to design a project that they will present to peers and some of the lower grade students.  Presently, some of the projects include the history and development of cultural riddles, the history of space exploration in the United States, where and why do interstate highways end, the influence of horror movies on our psyches and many more.
