Spelling List

April 30-May 4

We are done!!!!!!!!

***Remember to say words while you sort them!!!

Center  Schedule: (assignments may be completed at center time, as homework, and may be completed in more than one sitting)

Day 1:  Cut out both sets of words, put one in baggy and sort the other according to the sort done in your Word Study Journal on Friday.  Glue the words you sorted down correctly leaving a space under each word.  Recopy the word underneath the word you glued in  The words in the baggy are to work with all week.

Day 2:  3 speed sorts/record them/Written sort/a WordHunt-record in the correct sort.

Day 3:  3 speed sorts/record them and a Blind Sort (if you made mistakes please do another blind sort)-test on Friday.

A lot of research has been completed on the best way to present words in education.  What we traditionally call spelling should actually be a part of a literacy program and include phonemic awareness, phonics, and vocabulary.  "Spelling" is developmental and we are all at different stages of that development, which is why there are different features being studied.  The speed sorts done for homework promote automaticity of calling the word which, in turn, promotes fluency.  Word Hunts for each feature relate the importance of spelling to reading.

We are trying to move away from the "write your words 5 times each" approach.  While it will help for a Friday test, the child would most likely not pass the same test 2 weeks later.  We want to give the students the tools to figure out unfamiliar words they come across in their reading, not memorize them for a test.
