Aug. 22  Learn class rules, policies, grading, wages, and course overview and discuss Sr. Project.  Complete ID Cards.

Aug 23  Discuss the communication process and interferences in that process.  DOL #1 Read John Goddard's story and begin Life Lists.  Lists due Mon.

Aug 24  Read "Buck Fanshaw's Funeral"  and identify the problems in the comm. process.  Learn euphamism.  Work on life list.   Read "Alibi Ike" and identify the communication problem in this story.  Learn ways to fix comm. problems.  Sheer Madness situation and solution.  DOL # 2

Aug 25  Read "Secret Life of Walter Mitty"  compare to Goddard.  Success formula.

Aug 29  Turn in Life list.  DOL #3  Classmate interview.  Interview and practice good questioning and notetaking skills.  Write classmate compositions.  Due Wed.

Aug 30-31  Present classmate orally covering all the points on the worksheet. discuss verbal presentation skills.  Continue composition.  Turn in composition.

Sept. 1 Discuss listening techniques. Discuss images and symbols.  Identify international symbols

Mon. --Labor Day

Tues--Read "Dear Dad" poem.  Complete worksheet on figurative language. Messages without words.  Review for test.

Wed.--Test on Communication in Workplace Unit.

Thurs. 9/8  Correct test.  Receive research paper instructions  (see file of Sr. Project Packet).   Learn to write source cards.  Begin research in library.

Mon. - Thurs.  9/12--9/15  Research in library. 

Thurs. 9/15.  Seven  Source Cards are due. 

Mon. 9/19  Read info sources.  Learn note taking techniques.  Learn and write a thesis for research paper.

Tues.  9/20  Thesis statement due.  Begin writing Intro. to paper.  Do paragraph development worksheet.

Wed.  9/21  Learn how to cite sources and write rough draft of research paper.

Thurs.  9/22  Continue writing of rough draft of career portion of paper. 

Mon. 9/26-9/27    Write rough draft. 

Wed. Rough draft due.  Fill out the grade sheet and turn in.  Go over instructions for Phase II of paper.  See handout.

Tues. --Thurs 9/27  --9/29  Research information for Project.  Project proposal due Thursday (typed).

Week 7 Assignments Oct. 4-- Oct. 6

Mon.  Oct. 4   Students will write the phase II portion (Project Development) of their papers and support the development of their project ideas with research information.

Tues. - Wed.  Work on the writing and typing of the papers.  Typed drafts due Monday.  Typed drafts must include the entire paper including title page, Career research, project proposal and development, and sources cited page.  Do not include the charts until the final draft.

Thurs.  No school--Teacher inservice

 

Weeks 8-12 Assignments Oct 10--Nov 15

Mon.  Oct 10  Turn in typed rough draft of entire paper.  Begin "Starting a Job" unit.  Learn of Resumes and Job Appplication Forms.  Fill out data worksheet.  Watch video on resumes and Applications.

Tues.  Oct.11    Work on completing applications and resumes.  Get 3 references.

Wed.  Oct 12  Type resumes and References Page

Thurs.  Oct. 13  Continue typing.  Remember the final paper is due Monday Oct.  17.  Late papers will not be graded and students will not pass the course!  Mentors need to read the paper and students need to include the plagiarism statement with the paper.  See Sr. Project Packet for Final Grade Sheet and Plagiarism statement.

OCT. 19  Parent Teacher Conferences 4:30-8:00 (Extra Credit for attending).

Mon. Oct. 17  Put Senior paper packet together and turn in papers by 1:00 PM.  Type resumes.

Tues.  Oct 18  Learn how to write cover letters for a job.  Learn Block style business letter writing.  Write a cover letter.  Make up a job you would like to apply for or find a job in the Want Ads.

Wed.  Oct 19  Read "Interview Bloopers" and learn what to do and not to do in job interviews. 

Thurs.  Oct 20  Write out answers to typical interview questions. Create 3 questions to ask in an interview.  Continue discussing interview do's and don'ts. 

Mon.  Oct 24  Mock interviews.  Bring resumes and dress up.

Tues.  Oct 25  Mock interviews cont.

Wed.  Oct. 26  "Why Young People Fail to Get Jobs."  Complete worksheet.

Thurs.  Oct. 27  Employer/Employee expectations.

Mon. Oct  31  Ken/Ruben Video.  Write 1-page comparison/contrast paper on who gets the promotion.

Tues. Nov 1  Read "Learning a Trade"  identify 8 jobs and their duties.  Do worksheet.

Wed.  Nov 2  Read "High Costs of Child Labor Laws."  Know labor laws for test.

Thurs.  Nov. 3  Write 100+ words on what factors cause stress in your life?  Learn ways to manage stress and tips to relieve stress on the job.  Read "45 A Month" and answer the study questions.

Mon. Nov 7  Review for Starting a Job Unit test.

Tues.  Nov 8  Test on Starting a Job unit.  Following Directions pre-test.

Wed.  Nov. 9  Begin Giving and Following Directions unit.  Learn plan.  Do following directions activities.  View directions video.

Thurs.  Nov.  10  Create structures in groups and write directions to rebuild them.

Mon.  Nov. 14  Recreate structures by following others' written instructions.

Tues.  Nov. 15  Following Directions Test.

Nov 28  Read "Jury of Her Peers." 

Nov. 29  Write a statement to the jury (as if at the conclusion of a trial) to convict Mrs. Wright of murder addressing the evidence in the story.

Nov. 30  Jury Statement paper is due.  Robber Game.  Things Aren't as They Appear.  Q&A.

Dec 1  Participate in Trouble on the Bridge and Lunar Survival situations.

Dec. 5  Read "Jury of Her Peers" and write a persuasive essay to the jury to convict Mrs. Wright of murder.

Dec. 6  Finish essay

Dec 7  Participate in Dilemma situation.  Answer dilemma questions. 

Dec. 8  Fill out Values and Personality Survey.  Assess results.

Dec. 12-14  Watch Twelve Angry Men.  Answer study questions.  How do the pieces of evidence disprove the boy's guilt.  How is there reasonable doubt?

Dec. 15  Comm. in work groups video.  Participate in Trouble on the Bridge Problem solving.

Dec. 19  Comm. in groups handout.  Analyzing group comm.  Group evaluations of  Who gets the truck, Nick Perone ordeal, Restaurant uniforms.  Planning company party.

Jan. 3  Read "Death of Me" and answer study questions.

Jan. 4  Read conflict situations and complete worksheets for "Crossing the Line," "Tough Times," and "Spring Break."

Jan. 5  View conflict with David and Julian.  Learn Steps for negotiating.  Discuss how the rules were and were not applied in the previous conflict situations.   Learn Terms for Negotiating.  Negotiate benefits as management and workers for Widget Workers Union #303.    Compromise to aviod a strike.

Jan.  9  Read "Catbird Seat" and answer the study questions.  Discuss how the workers should resolve the conflict by identifying the differences in personalities and values.

Jan. 10  Begin Communication with customers Unit.   Write 100 words on why you patronize certain businesses.  Answer survey.   Notes on marketplace.  Comm. with customers video.   Why customers change business.

Jan 11  Read "Pul-eeze, Will someone "Help Me?" and answer the questions about poor service.

Jan 12  Learn advertizing strategies.  Begin advertisement analysis and comparisons.

Jan.  16  Finish comparison and present on Tues in class.  Must present 1 print ad and one radio or TV ad.

Jan.  17-Jan 18  Present advertisements orally to class.

Jan 19  Make ad posters with a partner to advertize a product, service, or business.

Jan 23  Finish poster ads and get instructions for product demonstrations.

Jan 25  Present product demonstrations to class.

Jan. 25  Finish up Product Demos and begin Casablanca.

Jan. 26  View Casablanca and answer questions about treatment of customers.

Jan 31  Finish movie and questions.  Turn in.

Feb 1  Learn commication to resolve conflicts and complaints with customers.  Watch instructional video 10B.  Write a response to a customer complaint letter.

Feb 2  Review unit and take test on Comm. with Customers Unit.

Feb 3.  Work in comp. lab typing forms for portfolio.

Feb 7  Work in groups to create a reconstruction of the employee lounge.  Write a new plan and persuasive proposal to convince the Operations dep. that they should accept your proposal.

Feb 8  Present to class your lounge proposals.  Review Sr. Presentation pointers and practice.

Feb. 9-10  Type up portfolios.

Feb. 14  Prepare and practice presentations.

Feb.  15  Senior Presentations.  Work on Amusement Park design and proposals.

Feb 16-Feb 22  Amusement park slide shows and written proposals. 

Feb. 23  Show and orally present slide shows for the final.
