Weeks 1-7 Nov 16 - Jan 18

Wed. Nov 16  Learn rules, policies, grading, course overview.  Write 100-200 words in writing journal on topic "Reading."  What do you like to read?  Why?

Thurs. N0v 17  Take the pre-test.  Discuss and take notes on the pre-test.

Mon. 11/21  Learn types of sentences ( by structure) and complete the sentences worksheet.  Write S-CD-CX-CdCx sentences.

Tues. 11/22  Correctly writing titles and capitalization worksheet.  (See file)

Mon. 11/28  Read "Cold Equations." 

Tues.  11/29  Discuss story and preventative measures.  Work in groups to prepare the newscasts.

Wed 11/30    Create a newscast to report the outcome of the story.  Present orally.

Thurs.  12/1  Write  Persuasive Essay Rough Draft.  We'll revise and peer edit.  Final draft is in dark  ink or typed.

Mon.--12/5  Assess Final essay.  Read "The Bass, River and Sheila." 

Tues 12/6  Do worksheets.  Learn etymologies and strategies for descriptive writing.

Wed. 12/7  Write Descriptive writing assignment.

Thurs. 12/8     Revise descriptive writing.  Read "Book of Sand" p. 44 and do worksheets on pronoun usage and agreement.

Mon 12/12  Read "Boys and Girls" p. 53.  Discuss the symbolism of Flora to the narrator's life.  Quiz on the reading.

Tues 12/13  Finish and correct quiz on "Boys and Girls" story.  Learn connotations and denotations.  Do worksheets.

Wed. 12/14  Read "Everyday Use"  Create a collage quilt block with at least 6 symbols that represent oneself.  Incorporate your name into the quilt pattern and include pictures, but no words.  Color it.

Thurs 12/15  Take test on the "Hard Choices" Unit.

Mon 12/19  Correct the test.  Cover research paper instructions.  Learn how to create source cards.  Honors--go to library and find a biography to read.

Tues -12/20  Christmas party.

Tues 1/3 -1/5  Research information for research paper in the library.  Students must find 5-6 different sources and at least 3 different types.  Source cards due Thurs.

Mon . 1/9  Learn Paraphrasing, direct quoting, and summarizing for creation of note cards for the research paper.  Complete notetaking worksheet [see file--Engl 10A Note Taking Wkst] and turn in.  Make note cards.

Tues. 1/10  Continue making note cards.  25 cards are due at the beginning of class on Tues.   Students must use info from all the required number of sources.

Wed. 1/11- Mon. 1/16   Make note cards.   Each note card must contain a tracking number corresponding to the source cards, a page number, and a topic (topic should be one of the 5 topics listed in the information packet on page 2).

Tues 1/17  Turn in 25 notecards.  Discuss thesis statements.  Write thesis from notecards.   Honors needs 30 cards.

Wed. 1/18  Create outline

 

 

 

Weeks 8-12 Assignments Oct 6--Nov 15

 Wed  Oct. 5  Thesis statements due.  Students will learn how to create an outline to organize their information before writing  the research paper.  Due Thurs.

Thurs Oct 6  Outline due.  Students will learn how to parenthetically cite sources in their papers.  Students will learn how to write an introduction to their papers and begin the rough draft of the research paper.

Mon.  10/10  Students will focus on and learn how to write topic sentences and paragraph development using supporting details from the research.   Paragraph Development Worksheet--See file.   Students will continue writing the research paper.

Tues-Thurs.  10/11-13  Write rough draft.  Due Mon.

--Parent Teacher Conferences  Oct 19   (Ex Credit for attending).

Mon.-Oct 17  Revise rough draft.  Go over requirements for final draft.  Due 10/24.  Students will be on their own to type the final drafts.

Tues.  Oct. 18  Type source page and title page for paper.

Wed. Oct. 19    Journal--What does patriotism mean to Me?  Learn formal vs informal types of writing.   Begin reading Nothing But the Truth to p 44.

Thurs. Oct 20  Read  novel Nothing But the Truth to p. 88

Mon. Oct 24  Final Paper due.  No exceptions.  Late papers will not be graded!   Read and discuss novel.  (approx. 35 pg. /day)  American President video clip.

Tues. Oct 25   Read novel

Wed.  Oct 26   Discuss Facts vs. Opinions and Faulty logic.  Analyze the article from the Manchester Record and complete the worksheet.

 Thurs.  Oct 27   Read novel.  Finish Nothing But the Truth.

Mon Oct 31  Review essay test writing strategies.  Take essay test on the novel.

Tues.  Nov 1  Begin Hearts That Love Unit.  Read "Two Kinds" complete worksheets.

Wed. Nov 2  Complete "Two Kinds" worksheet.

Thurs Nov 3  Read " Geraldo, No Last Name."  Read "First Seven Years."  Learn antogonist/protagonist.   Learn Allusions.

Mon Nov 7  Complete Worksheets for "First Seven Years."  Learn how to complete analogies.  Learn Diction.

Tues. Nov. 8  Read "Distillation"  Discuss religious symbols in story.

Wed.  Nov. 9  Read "Life is Sweet..." and "Lessons of Love"

Thurs. Nov 10   Review for final on Mon/Tues.

Mon/Tues Nov. 14/15  Take Final test. Test will cover the Hearts That Love Unit.
