Spanish 1 Course Overview

First Semester 2008

Course Description: The Level I language course focuses on the development of communicative competence in the target language and understanding of the culture(s) of the people who speak the language. It assumes that the students have minimal or no prior knowledge of the language and culture.  The major means of communication between students and instructors will be in the target language.  By the end of Level I, students will exhibit Novice-Mid level proficiency in speaking and writing and Novice-High level proficiency in listening, and reading (ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines, 1999).

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT

Attendance and Tardies:  following Paulding County Board of Education Policy An unexcused tardy or an unexcused absence equals a zero in any work that is graded by the teacher during the time not in class.  All other absences or tardies must have a medical or legal excuse in order to be excused; missed work must also be completed and submitted within three school days upon the students return.  What is considered an excused or an unexcused absence can be found in the student handbook.  If a student is absent, he/she should check www.schoolrack.com/barber or www.schoolrack.com/hlugo or e-mail the teacher to inquire about the work that needs to be done or made up.  Also, calling a classmate to inquire about work done or to be done is highly recommended!  For further inquiries please refer to the student handbook regarding the attendance policy.

 Make-up Work:  A parent, medical or legal excuse must be brought in within three days of returning to school.  For every day absent, the student has one day to make up the work.  For an excused tardy or absence it is the responsibility of the student to see the teacher the first day back about making up assignments, quizzes, tests, or assessments.   Check the make-up work binder to see exactly what needs to be made up and to sign up for a time to come in to make up the work.  Make-up times are before or after school.  If an appointment for making up work is scheduled and not kept, a zero will be given for the missed work.   If the assignments, quizzes, tests or assessments were assigned before the absence, the student will be required to do the work with the rest of the class on the specified date(s) unless prior arrangements have been made with the teacher.   Classroom Expectations:1.    Be on task.  Do not sleep, daydream, write notes/letters, or do work for other classes; do not eat, drink             except for water), or chew gum; and do not comb hair or apply make-up.2.    Be quiet.  Do not talk while instruction is going on.3.    Be prepared.  Do not forget all necessary materials including textbook, notebook, paper, writing utensil (black/blue                    pen, pencil), assignments, issued passes, signed forms, etc.4.    Be respectful.  Do not talk back, criticize or argue with teacher or students.5.    Be on time.  Do not come late to class, unless you bring a pass with you.   Consequences for Not Meeting Classroom Expectations:1.       If a student is disrespectful or continually talkative/disruptive, the consequences will also be as follows:a.       1st time Student/Teacher conferenceb.       2nd time Teacher detention for 25 minutes c.        3nd time communication with parent/guardiand.       4th time and beyond—Referral to level administratorNotebook: A three-ring binder with dividers for this class (may be used in conjunction with other classes) is required of each student. In the binder you must keep tabs labeled:  Repaso rápido, notes, class work and quizzes/test. Tutoring:  If you need extra help, set up a time with the teacher for before or after school.   The teacher must have at least a twenty-four hour notice.  Remember to pay attention in class, take notes, ask questions, review the notes, do the assignments, and study!  If you are still having problems, then ask for tutoring. You may also want to practice on the interactive website that follows our textbook at www.classzone.com .  The following schedule is free tutoring available to all students for both Spanish I and II:Monday:  Ms Barber 8am rm. 601; Wednesday:  Mr. Lugo 3:30 rm. 602; Thursday:  Ms. Bomar 8am rm. 601 and Friday Ms. DeDominicis 3:30pm rm. 603 Cheating: Students found cheating will receive a zero for the assignment, quiz, test, assessment or final exam.  Student may be referred to an administrator and a parent contacted.  Hall Passes: Students will be issued five passes for the entire semester.  Once you have used all five passes, no more passes will be given.  At the end of the semester, you will turn in any remaining passes for extra points on the mid-term.  Each pass will count as one extra point.   Parent/Student Resources:  Parents and students can access, review and check the progress, lessons, homework, study material, resources, quizzes and test dates as well as receive weekly curriculum reminders for Spanish I by visiting these websites:  www.schoolrack.com/barber or www.schoolrack.com/hlugo.  Both are maintained weekly by their teachers.  All current lessons and make-up work are located on the corresponding web pages.

The goals of the Spanish II level is: to equip students with realistic lifelong skills that will enable them to function competently in a language other than their own and communicate and compete effectively in the global community and marketplace, to instill a greater awareness of their own culture and the culture(s) of others and to enrich students’ lives by increasing their appreciation for language and culture.  The modern language curriculum will develop students’ skills in the four traditional skill areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing.
