Grading and Practice

Grading

Practice time/ classwork   20%

Playing Quizzes                 20%Rehearsal Techniques       30%Performances                     30%       Total                           Classwork -   Any worksheet, composition or group work with class time to complete.  Classwork becomes homework if not complete.    Playing Quizzes - Students are given several days to either play an assigned piece that has been worked on in class.  Students may from time to time also be given the option of several pieces to play.  Students are expected to be prepared and give the best performance they can.  Not playing at all results in a zero.  Talk to the director if you need additional help with playing in front of others.  Rehearsal Techniques -    Students earn 20 points per day for having all materials, participating, and following the rules of the class.  At the end of the week, total points are given as a grade.  Forgotten instruments, music, reeds, etc.  will result in missed points.    Performances -    Students are expected to be at ALL performances.  Excuses should be discussed with the director well in advance of performance.  Check your calendar for ALL performances this year.   ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------  Practice is vital to the success of the band. More importantly, it is vital to the success of your child.  Practice helps build the small muscles and lungs up that before have not been used.  Practice reinforces what we have done in class and better prepares a student of how they need my help.  It also identifies students that need lessons for extra help or for advancement.    Please note that I am here at any point to help you and your child through the wonderful activity of band.  This is my way to keep in contact in a small way with parents.  Please refer to the website parent page for further ideas.  www.mauryk12.org.  Follow the links to Cox middle school and go to clubs.  There you will find our band page.    If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at school 840-3902 or by email  mitchellb4@k12tn.net.

Rules

Rules and Discipline

Class Rules  1.  Treat others as you would want to be treated.  2.  Keep our room at school safe for everyone.  3.  Strive for excellence.  Discipline  Discipline is tracked through different interventions in a discipline folder.  Students are not only punished for actions but given tools in order to make wiser decisions in the future.  Below are the levels of intervention.  Level one -  Student/ Teacher conference ( 2-3 max) Level two -  Time-out/ Write offs (2 max) Level three -  Parent, teacher, student conference/ Detention (2 max) Level four -  Other faculty brought in to help (school counselor, students’ other               teachers, etc.) Level five -  Office (Administrative intervention)

Interventions are tracked throughout the year.  As a parent you are the most important person to your child.  Working together with the teacher is the key to supporting the student.  Supporting the student gives them the tools for success.  Mr. Mitchell will call you with small concerns as well as large ones.  Staying in contact is the key.  Please note that extreme discipline problems may result in dismissal from the band program.

Bullying is tracked in the same folder following bullying interventions of school.
