SPELLING for First Graders

BEGINNING TO SPELL:
In Reading and also Spelling...we will begin the new year with a review of letters and the sounds they make. It is imperative that they know these skills immediately. They were taught this last year in kindegarten, so it is mostly a review for first graders.
In the beginning, we will be doing a lot of writing. This means they will spell the word as they hear the letter sounds. The spelling may not be correct, but the sound should be. Such as: they may spell the word "teacher"--"techr". The word is not correctly spelled, however, the sounds are correct. As we write and read more, the spelling is corrected each time. This is called "inventive spelling". The more they write and correct, the better speller they will become.
However, as we all know, spelling must be more accurate than this. So, we begin our spelling program. Our Spelling Program goes hand in hand with our Reading Program. The skills that are taught in reading are used in the spelling words.
The Vocabulary Words for Reading and the Spelling Words for the week are not the same.
THE SPELLING SERIES:
On Monday, the Spelling Words will be sent home, along with the Vocabulary Words for Reading (vocabulary words do not have to be spelled (only recognized)--the spelling words have to be spelled). We will take a practice Spelling Test on Thursday, and a final test on Friday. The final test will count on their report card. The practice will come home for you to review any missed words. Please sign and return the practice test on Friday.
