MATH for First Graders
In order to lay a good foundation for math, we will be working on numbers to 20 for the first few days of school. We will review how each number is made, and also count objects to match the number. This will be necessary before we begin our math program, because our book assumes that all children have learned these skills already and are ready to move on. However, some children need a little more review before beginning.
Math is a skill that requires a lot of drill and practice. This year the student will be learning simple adding and subtracting, solving word problems, measuring, counting money; along with many other math skills taught in our Houghton Mifflin Math Series. This series has 8 units, which includes 22 chapters. It is very difficult to finish the book by the end of the year, but we try. Some chapters require much time, while others can be hurried. Our goal is a chapter every two weeks.
It is important that we work together in teaching these life-long skills. Please read the "Family News" letter that your child will bring home every time we begin a new math chapter. This letter will help you understand the process I will be teaching your child at school. While helping your child at home, it will be a great benefit for them, if you will follow the same process. This will certainly make math seem easier for them. Practice at home as much as possible. I will not send home a lot of homework, but when I do...I feel that it is very necessary to have the extra help from home. Thanks for your help in advance!!
