The Eight Parts of Speech with Examples

Part of Speech and DefinitionExamples
Noun: a person, place, thing, or ideateacher, Mr. Clark, school, desk, love
Pronoun: a word that takes the place of a nounhe, she, it, I, you, them, they, her, him, us
Adjective: a word that describes a nounsad, large, grateful, clever, intelligent, blue
Verb: an action word or a word that links the subject  to the predicaterun, sniff, sing, talk, is, am, are, was, were
Adverb: a word that describes a verb, adjective, or another adverbcarefully, suddenly, quicly, really, slowly
Preposition: position and relationship wordsunder, over, inside, outside, on, in, beyond, during
Conjunction: connecting wordsand, or, because, so, if, but, however, in addition, for
Interjection: emotional expressions used in isolationOh! You're kidding! Ouch! Ugh! My heavens! Oh my gosh!
