Using geography to understand history
Geography in the Classroom.
- Using maps weekly to determine the expansion and impact of ancient civilizations.
Geography has had a major impact on history. The way a civilization develops is due in large part to surrounding land use.
Mountain ranges can keep a territory safe from invaders, but it can also keep a culture isolated. Rivers can provide both fresh drinking water, and transportation routes integral to trade. These geographical features and many others influence the development and spread of culture and history.
Students in World History will be asked to both identify, and analyze major geographical features of the world EVERY WEEK as they arise during each unit. By the end of the year students will be able to locate, identify, and label all of the following areas;
- All major Oceans and prominent Seas
- All 7 Continents
- The Nile River
- Major Mountain Ranges
- Fertile Crescent/ Mesopotamia
- Nile Delta/Egypt/ Nubia
- India
- Persian/Byzantine Empires
- China/ Mongolian Empire
- Greece/ Ancient Greek Lands
- Italy/ Ancient Roman Empire
- England/Great Britain
- Spain
- Portugal
- Germany
- Italy
- France
As a result of weekly review and testing, students will have a strong foundation of the connection of geography to history.
