The Wolcott Tech Boy’s Volleyball Team lost a heart breaker to cross town rivals Lewis Mills at the Wolcott Tech Gym during our 1st Pink Out Game to support Breast Cancer Awareness and the Pink Rose Fund at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital.
Setter Dennis Waibel had 45 assists, 3 aces, 25 digs, 2 kills; Outside Hitter Justin Tharau had 25 kills, 32 digs, 3 aces; Outside Hitter Steve Oakes had 12 kills, 1 ace, 12 digs; Middle Hitter Tyler Kackowski had 19 kills, 1 block, 12 digs; Outside Hitter Jack Farrington 5 kills, 3 digs; Outside Hitter Nick Baldwin had 1 block, 7 kills, 32 digs; Libero Francesco Chiaravalloti had 6 digs.
Lewis Mills had Chad Cables had 14 kills, 6 blocks, 5 digs, 3 aces; Matt Disorbo had 41 assists, 7 digs, 2 kills; Tyler Markert 12 kills; Greg Senk 12 kills, 11 digs, and 2 aces.
The Wolcott Tech Wildcats learned a valuable lesson about court focus, communication, and mental mindset. They played an amazing set during games 1 and 2. Their communication, offense, and defense was perfect. They controlled the court, owned the net, and had consistent and aggressive serves.
During sets 3 & 4, as mentioned by senior Dennis Waibel and Justin Tharau, “we came into the game a little over confident and Lewis Mills capitalized on our weaknesses and we were slow to recovery”. During these two games, the Wildcats showed moments of brilliance while running 3 to 4 point rallies, worked on improving communication and our overall game. Our serves were off the normal track during these games as well.
Game number five brought a closely contested match where the Wildcats found their groove for the majority of the game. Their serves and defense were better, their court confidence was better, as well as the court focus. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, the Spartans ran off two points to close the final game at 15-13.
Setter Dennis Waibel and Justin Tharau set the tone with loud conversation on the court keeping the team on their toes. The defense by the Wildcats tonight was the best all season long – great digs and saves all night long. A lot of players were hitting the floor and coming up with great saves. Justin Tharau, Tyler Kackowski, Steve Oakes, Nick Baldwin and Jack Farrington all had great plays offensively and defensively at the net. Francesco Chiaravalloti did a great job in defense and motivating our team with his sense of humor.
The coaching staff is extremely impressed with this team’s resiliency to overcome the tough games of 3 and 4, and rise to the occasion on game number five, proving our mental toughness is starting to work. The new lineup, communication, and mental toughness will lead the team to more victories in the future.
The coaching staff is still very proud of the accomplishments of this team.
A special thanks goes to Dennis Waibel, Jack Farrington, Tyler Kackowski, and Matt Dell'Agnese for the idea of the Pink-Out Game for the boys volleyball season. They asked if we could do this after our girls volleyball team held a pink-out game in the fall.
They have started a new tradition with Wolcott Tech and Lewis Mills. From here on out, when we play at Wolcott Tech, it will be a pink-out game for the Pink Rose Fund, and when we play at Lewis Mills, it will be a Purple-Out Game to support Alzheimer's Awareness.
None of this would have happened if those four young adults hadn't stepped up to the plate.
In the end, win or lose, this team did the right thing and raised about $400 for the Pink Rose Fund which could save a life, we played a great game for ourselves, the press, and most importantly, for our families.
We are looking forward to practice tomorrow and a fun surprise for the varsity players before homeroom.
Wolcott Tech’s record goes to 5-6 and Lewis Mills goes to 6-4.
