Reading
Book Reports: Each reading student will complete a book report every quarter. The book for your book report MUST be approved by Mrs. Rakoci before it is completed and turned in. Each quarter there will be a different format in which the book report needs to be completed. Mrs. Rakoci will hand out requirements/directions at the beginning of each new quarter.
Due Dates for Book Reports
Quarter 1 – Due no later than September 27th
Quarter 2 – Due no later than December 6th
Quarter 3 – Due no later than February 28th
Quarter 4 – Due no later than May 9th
Due dates for book reports are MANDATORY. Book reports turned in late will not be scored in time for report cards resulting in an incomplete grade for that quarter. You may turn your book report in any time before its due date.
Extra Credit Reading Logs:
You will be given an opportunity to complete extra credit each week for language arts. It is important that each student be reading at home. Just for being a responsible student and reading a book of your choice for at least 20 minutes a night, you can receive extra credit. If you would like extra credit you can complete a reading log each week. The reading log should tell me the date, name of the book, number of minutes you read, and a short summary of the story for each day. Please choose a book at your appropriate reading level. You may use your book report book for your reading log too!
Vocabulary and Comprehension Tests: There will be vocabulary words that correspond to the story in the literature book. You will have a vocabulary quiz at the end of each story in which you will demonstrate your knowledge of the definition of the word and be able to spell it correctly. You will also be taking a story comprehension test at the end of the story. Reviewing your stories and vocabulary words nightly is recommended. Remember...any reading you do at home can be used for your extra credit reading log!
Writing
In writing class you will be working on various writing activities focusing on the 6 traits of writing. Ideas, Organization, Word Choice, Voice, Sentence Fluency, and Conventions. We will also be studying some grammar techniques to help you with your writing and the revising/editing process. You will be working in your composition book for most of your writing drafts. Also, you will be asked to publish some of your writing by making a final published copy.
Social Studies
In social studies we will be exploring ancient world history starting with ancient civilizations through the Roman Empire. We will be reading, taking notes, doing activities, and group projects.
I am very excited for the new year and new challenges ahead! Please, at any time, if you have questions or concerns feel free to call or email me or my teaching partner Mr. Baker. Lets do our best to keep open communication all year long!
