I would also like to explain to you my discipline policy in my classroom. I believe it is important to have contact between teachers and parents about the behavior and success of the children. My discipline policy helps us have day to day contact in regards to your child.
In my classroom I have a board with three colors; green, yellow, and red. Each student has a clip with his or her name on it. Everyone starts on green, green is great. If your child gets in trouble for not following one of the classroom rules they will be asked to move their clip to yellow. And finally, if the poor behavior does not stop they will move their clip to red. In specific cases your child may be subject to the school wide discipline plan.
If your child remains on green the entire day they will get a “green day”. If they put their name on it and have you sign it the next day at school they can put the green day in the basket for a drawing at the end of the week. If they have 5 green days that week, they have 5 chances of winning the drawing. One name will be drawn each week.
If your child is not on green at the end of the day, a white slip will be stapled or put in your child’s agenda stating what color they were on and what behaviors caused them to move their clip.
Yellow indicates that your child has received a warning and possibly a time-out for a particular behavior and the behavior must stop. Red indicates that your child is engaging in inappropriate behavior on a consistent basis and the behavior needs to be corrected. The students on red will have consequences under my discretion. Possible consequences include; loss of recess, lunch detention; loss of Fun Friday; etc.
Failure to bring a white slip signed by a parent to school the next day will result in a phone call to the parent by the student and teacher. If the parent sees the slip and accidentally misplaces it, a signed note from the parent will be accepted in its place. When the slip is returned to school the student will move his or her clip back to green.
