Mrs. Corley

Classroom Content

1st Grade

We just started our exciting simulation unit called “Kid Town!” By popular vote, our town is named Play Town. (We made sure to point out that this didn’t mean that all we were doing was playing!Smile) The students name the stores, create the products, develop the price lists, and sell the products to other students. During the 3rd and 4th nine weeks, your child will apply for jobs, work at the stores, earn a paycheck, be able to spend his/her money, keep a balance of his/her money, vote for a mayor, as well as having many mini-lessons along the way!

2nd Grade

We have just started our unit on Medieval Times. We will be creating a book as we go over various topics. The book will include a page on monks, kings, knights, peasants, etc. We will discuss the different social classes and have activities based on each one. We will be making our own butter, creating a model of a knight, practicing calligraphy and many more hands-on experiences within the topic of the Middle Ages!

3rd Grade

For the rest of the year, we will be doing “Expressionism.” In this unit, we explore various forms of expression with a focus on art and various art periods. Your child will have the opportunity to learn about famous artists and create artwork in the style of that period. This is always such a fun unit and we hope the students learn many things – not only the various art periods, but also that you do not have to be good at drawing to be an artist!

4th Grade

For this semester, we will be working on two different units simultaneously. Mrs. Corley is working on Greek Mythology. Each day, we study a popular myth from Greek society as well as get with our Athenian Secret teams.  In Athenian Secret, the teams are competing to earn drachmas (Greek coins) by correctly completing math puzzles. Mrs. P is working on a unit called Survival. In this unit, your child will participate in a simulation called S.O.S. Each group must research the topics of the day in order to find their ship-wrecked family. They will also work together on various survivor challenges.

5th Grade

For this semester, we will be working on two different units simultaneously. Mrs. P is teaching a unit incorporating concepts of energy. The initial focus is on constructing and testing a “skimmer.” The students will compete to see which team applies their knowledge to build the fastest skimmer.  Mrs. Corley is teaching a unit on various structures and the forces that act upon them. We are specifically focusing on bridges and are experimenting with different designs, materials, and effects of force. The end project will be designing a bridge with a bridge company. Each student will have a job in this company and we will have a competition to see which one can hold the most weight! Both units involve a great deal of physics!
