Classroom Content

1st Grade

We are currently doing a simulation called Kid Town.  We voted and named our town Happy Hideout.  The students apply for a new job each week and based on their persuasive writing, will get assigned a job.  The students work in the town, keep a balance book, go through various mini-lessons like friendly letter writing, vote for mayor, and much more!  We really enjoy our town and activities, in fact sometimes so much that we don't have time for tally sheets or free time!

2nd Grade

We are currently working on a unit called Bound to be Round.  This is an exciting unit that incorporates the concepts of different "round" things.  We study circumference, diameter, the Scientific Method (in relationship to experiments with round objects), graphing, and charting.  We just finished experiments with eggs, bubble gum, and soap bubbles!

3rd Grade

We are really getting involved in our Expressionism unit.  We are discussing different art periods and creating artwork in the same style as these periods.  We have already explored ancient art (mainly cave painting and mosaics), the Renaissance period and portraits as well as DaVinci, printmaking, and impressionistic art (like Monet).  We will be taking a very exciting field trip to the High Museum of Art and Carlos Museum at Emory (both are in Atlanta) on May 14th.  We will be touring with docents as well as creating our own art and wrapping a mummy!!

4th Grade

We are currently wrapping up our Survival unit this week (3/12/08) and will begin Mythology.  Our Mythology unit will include math challenges for drachmas (Greek unit of money) and reading / discussing individual myths and the connection they have with the modern world.  This is such as interesting unit and helps children understand the culture of myths as well as the allusions made to them in our society.

5th Grade

We are continuing our dual units on Survival and Money Matters.  We switch classes in the middle of the day so all of the students get the benefits of both units.  Mrs. Puschaver is directing the Survival unit.  Your child is working with a team on a simulation called S.O.S.  They are trying to find the location of a shipwrecked family.  This involves a lot of experiments and research.  I am directing the unit on Money Matters.  We are discussing the various aspects of advertising and marketing (including advertising our own goods), playing the Stock Market Game, and discussing the concepts of economics and personal finance.
