You will have one class period to explore these websites. If you are unable to read all of the information you may look at it again during a study hall, or at home. If you have not finished your vocabulary assignment you should also be working on that at home. The vocabulary packet is due Monday, February 6th.
Into the Wild
There are a total of 203 pages in Jon Krakauer’s novel, Into the Wild. The following pages are optional: Chapter Nine, Davis Gulch, pages 84-97; Chapter Fourteen, The Stikine Ice Cap, pages 134-144; Chapter Fifteen, The Stikine Ice Cap, pages 145-156. If you would like to read these chapters you may do so, but it is not required and you will not be expected to know any material from the listed chapters.
There may be a reading quiz on various chapters (except for the above chapters). The entire novel will need to be completed by February 28th, and you will be writing a response paper, as well. The response paper will be a significant grade. In addition, you will be required to complete a reading journal for every chapter.
This reading journal should include the following information:
- Character names
- Important dates/events
- Question/comments you have
- Reactions to the reading
- Text connections
- Moments that include elements of the American Dream, including: “triumph of the individual”, “feeling of optimism”, and “America as the land of promise”.
- Any other pertinent information you want to include
You will be graded periodically on your reading journal and it will be beneficial to keep an accurate and thorough journal. You must have separate entries for each chapter. The journal can be typed, or hand written. Do NOT go on spark notes and provide their summaries for your journal entries. This would be plagiarism and would result in a zero, as well as, possible disciplinarian action.
I have provided a time frame for you to follow in order to finish the book. You may absolutely read ahead, but do not fall behind on the reading journals. A suggested strategy would be to take notes while reading, or upon the completion of each chapter, write down key events/characters etc.
