Into the Wild Webquest

You will be reading a novel, Into the Wild, by Jon Krakaeur

You will start with a webquest about his life, which will provide you background knowledge about him.  This webquest will help you to better understand what you will be reading.  Follow the link below to start the webquest.

http://www.zunal.com/webquest.php?w=112917

You will have one class period to explore these websites.  If you are unable to read all of the information you may look at it again during a study hall, or at home.  If you have not finished your vocabulary assignment you should also be working on that at home.  The vocabulary packet is due Monday, February 6th.

Into the Wild

There are a total of 203 pages in Jon Krakauer’s novel, Into the Wild.  The following pages are optional:  Chapter Nine, Davis Gulch, pages 84-97; Chapter Fourteen, The Stikine Ice Cap, pages 134-144; Chapter Fifteen, The Stikine Ice Cap, pages 145-156.  If you would like to read these chapters you may do so, but it is not required and you will not be expected to know any material from the listed chapters.

There may be a reading quiz on various chapters (except for the above chapters).  The entire novel will need to be completed by February 28th, and you will be writing a response paper, as well.  The response paper will be a significant grade.  In addition, you will be required to complete a reading journal for every chapter

This reading journal should include the following information:

  • Character names
  • Important dates/events
  • Question/comments you have
  • Reactions to the reading
  • Text connections
  • Moments that include elements of the American Dream, including: “triumph of the individual”, “feeling of optimism”, and “America as the land of promise”.
  • Any other pertinent information you want to include

You will be graded periodically on your reading journal and it will be beneficial to keep an accurate and thorough journal.  You must have separate entries for each chapter.  The journal can be typed, or hand written.  Do NOT go on spark notes and provide their summaries for your journal entries.  This would be plagiarism and would result in a zero, as well as, possible disciplinarian action.

I have provided a time frame for you to follow in order to finish the book.  You may absolutely read ahead, but do not fall behind on the reading journals.  A suggested strategy would be to take notes while reading, or upon the completion of each chapter, write down key events/characters etc.

Author’s Note & Chapter One, pages 1-7 are due on Monday, February 6th

  • Provides background about Alex & his adventure

Chapter Two, pages 9-14 are due on Monday, February 6th

Chapter Three, pages 15-23 are due on Tuesday, February 7th

Chapter Four, pages 25-37 are due on Wednesday, February 8th (EXPECT A QUIZ)

Chapter Five, pages 38-46 & Chapter Six, pages 47-60 for February 9th-11th

I suggest the following time frame while you are in shop:

Chapter Seven, pages 61-69 for Sunday, February 12th

Chapter Eight, pages 70-85 for Monday, February 13th

Chapter Nine- SKIP, unless you want to read it

Chapter Ten, pages 98-102, for Tuesday, February 14th

Chapter Eleven, pages 103-116 for Wednesday, February 15th

  • Information about Chris McCandless’s family & their relationship

Chapter Twelve, pages 117-126 for Thursday, February 16th

Chapter Thirteen, pages 127-132 for Friday, February 17th

Chapter Fourteen, pages 133-first half of 134 and SKIP the rest of the chapter

Chapter Fifteen- SKIP, unless you want to read it

Chapter Sixteen, pages 157-171 for Saturday & Sunday, February 18th & 19th

Chapter Seventeen, pages 172-186 for Monday & Tuesday, February 20th & 21st

Chapter Eighteen, pages 187-199 for Wednesday, February 24th

Epilogue, pages 200-203 for Thursday, February 25th

Your response paper will be entered as a test/project grade.  Your reading journals will also be entered as a test/project grade.  Failure to complete these two assignments could result in a failing grade.
