Friday the 18th

There was an in-class assignment that needs to go into the new portfolio.  In case it didn't get accomplished, I am posting it here.

Pick one from each list of Acts of Mercy (Corporal and Spiritual) on page 217.  Write an example of something under one of the categories that you can do this summer.

The student should split the cost of a Display board with their partner for a Science project.  Please have the boards in by next Monday (or Tuesday if the student is not in class on memorial day)

INFORMATION ABOUT THE END OF THE YEAR SCIENCE PROJECT

This is the beginning of a three week period in 6th grade Science that is very intense in the classroom.  It is a time of preparing for the 7th grade Science expectation of a Science fair project.  We have already taken the first step by working on an experiment with the visiting 5th graders.  We will now work in teams or as individuals to create a complete Science Fair type project, including display boards.

I have the expectation that most of the work will be completed in class but there may be a few students who are unable to use class time productively.  If that happens, the student will have quiet study time and continue to learn but through a remedial, worksheet and book type method.  This will place the burden of the project as an at-home project, or the grade will reflect the inability to meet curriculum guidelines.  I will be contacting the parent if this becomes the case. It may be possible to have a parent helper for these students who are especially challenged by the process.

A completely different possibility is for the very motivated student who has a partner and parents who agree that they will do the experiment at home.  This has been an option chosen by a few students every year.  These students then have the opportunity to serve as assistants to all the in-class projects.  The motivated student then has the benefit of creating a Science project in a similar fashion as a 7th or 8th grader and being a part of several other Scientific experiments in class. It has also served as a beginning step of the actual project for the following year.

The option to work at home (or partially from home) must be verified by a written note to me from the parent.

I will provide the experiment sheets which will take the step of "inventing" a project out of the equation; plenty of time for that next year.  The experiment sheets will go home Monday or Tuesday night.

It is hard to imagine, but we actually use every last minute of school time as instructional time.  I have the privilege of teaching the sixth graders a few extra hours after the eighth graders have finished their instruction time.  Every year I am amazed at how we pull together to create Science Fair projects that teach the students the steps for the following year.

IN ADDITION, somehow we also find time to address the solar system and space mission section of Earth Science.  I look forward to this busy and exciting time for sixth grade.
