DETAILS SENT TO PARENTS ON 12/16 :  if student addressed envelope ;-)

  December 16, 2011

Dear Parent/Guardian,

             The Ellis Tech Simulation Club will be attending "Point-Con", a military game conference sponsored by the Cadet Wargames Committee of the US Military Academy in West Point, New York this April.  The West Point conference is scheduled for April 13 to April 15, 2012. (This is the second weekend of April vacation.)  Your student needs to be dropped at school on Friday April 13 by 8:30AM and picked up at school on Sunday, April 15 at 1:30PM.   The number of attendees will determine our method of travel, school bus size and Army van for luggage.

             The club voted for a deposit of $20 to hold a space and allow us to plan the budget.   Checks can be made out to "Ellis Tech. Simulation Club" or cash can be paid by Thursday, January 19, 2012.  As per club vote, members who worked at Ellis-Con get a discount of a $10 deposit.  Club members are expected have a club t-shirt ($8) to wear at the conference.  They also have to attended at least four afterschool meetings before April and have played a variety of games to show they can play a “long” game (the conference at West Point is 15-hours long, and we will be attending from opening to closing).  The number and gender of attendees affects the number of rooms, chaperones, & vehicles we need and those all effect the total price.  Historically the cost has been $20-$40 total for the weekend and the students need to bring some spending money to buy games or souvenirs and a bag lunch for travel on Friday.  Profits from Ellis Con in November, our sole fundraiser, will be used to off-set the expenses: two-day motel, meals, conference fee and fuel.  Last year we also visited two military museums and received guided tours of the grounds of the Military Academy.

             This is an approved school trip so all student handbook rules will apply.  After the total fee is determined, those students with a deposit will be sent a letter with permission slips and balance due.   Feel free to contact us at school for any information we can provide.  Information about the club can be found from the school website:  www.cttech.org/ellis  under 'student activities'.   Mr. Haskell, john.haskell@ct.gov, can be reached in his office 860-774-8511, ext.1418 or Mr. Carter, david.carter@ct.gov,  for any further information or questions about this or any other club activity.

Sincerely;

 MINI FIELD TRIP to CONNECICONN

Mini-Field Trip on Friday, 12/9 to ConnectIConn u in Newington.    Our host Matt Daigle, provided pizza and we brought drinks & snacks.  We played until 5;40pm and took advantage of a great discount to buy games for ourselves and as presents.  We had a great time and loved the opportunity to play a variety of games that were available to play to see how they were.

Here's the info. thjat went out to parents about Ellis Con and Point Con:

Dear Parent/Guardian,                                                                            November 7, 2011

            Your son/daughter joined the Ellis Tech. Simulation Club.  Our purpose is to explore historical battles, campaigns & wars, as well as political and transportation simulations through board and miniature gaming.   With a recent change to our charter, we also play fantasy & science fiction games.    Each spring the club travels to West Point, NY to take part in a gaming conference sponsored by the cadets at the US Military Academy.   In order to keep down the costs of transportation, motel and meals for a weekend at West Point, our club also hosts our own conference, Ellis-Con, each fall.

            Our conference this year at Ellis Tech is set for Saturday, November 19, 2011.  We ask that members help set-up Friday afternoon 2pm to 5:30pm  (or stay to help until 4pm)  plus work a three-hour shift helping with concessions, moving tables & chairs, helping man the ticket booth, AND work taking down from 8:30-9:30pm.  ALL members help close down from 8:30 to 9:30pm.    This is our sole fund-raiser.  The club voted that students who help with Ellis Con will pay $10 less deposit forWest Point.

            I am in need of assistance on Saturday, November 19. Mr. Carter & I are the only chaperones there all day and so  need adults to sit at the ticket/concession table.  If you can be of assistance, please let me know.  I need people to sit with a student for three (3) hours at the front table:  11AM to 2pm, 2-5pm and 5-8:30pm.   I can be reached at school, 774-8511 ext. 1418  or  John.Haskell@ct.gov  Parents are welcome to come to the conference to walk around and see the types of games; please pay if you choose to play however.  If you have access to any folding tables, we could use them!

            The West Point conference is scheduled for the last weekend of April vacation: April 13 to 15, 2012.  We leave from school Friday morning and you pick your child up at school on Sunday, at 1:30pm.   We’ll be asking for a deposit in December so we can budget for the number of vehicles, rooms & chaperones.

            Feel free to contact me at school for any information I can provide.  Please find the enclosed flyer for Ellis Con XXIII on November 19.    After the conference we'll be signing up people for the West Point weekend: deposits are $20 in advance ($10 for those who work at Ellis Con).    We are also hoping to attend a free holiday party at ConnectIConn, a hobby store, in Hartford, on a Friday in December after school, or Saturday.   Information about the club can be found from the school website:   www.cttech.org/ellis  under student activities.  Students should bring spending money for purchases and food, or bring a bag lunch as it’s a long day.  Microwave & fridge avail.

Sincerely;

2. Congratulations to the new Simulation Club Officers:

President –

Vice-Pesident – Gabby Fontenault

Secretary –  Jacob Reynolds

Treasurer – Travis Flickner

Ellis CON XXIII Chair - Zac Golob

They were elected on June 3 during Activity Day in Room 211 as per announcements.

The club also voted to amend the charter by removing  the word "historical" from the purpose found in ArticleI.  If the change is also approved (the Student Councilm, the Principal, etc.) then students in the futrure would be allowed to play fantasy and/or science fiction during club meetings.  Again, the changes do NOT go into effect until other approvals are obtained.

2.  Ellis Con XXIII is on Saturday, November 19 from 9am until 9pm in the hangar.  Entrance Fee is $10 at the door per person.   We plan on having a game auction at 5pm and a large formation tournament of Avalon Hill's B-17: Queen of the Skies with up to 15 players, each commanding their own mission.  Target for that day is a secret and will be revealed in the mission briefing.  Several prizes will be awarded for the event.

3.  The  West Point Tripwas  a great time.  Special thanks to chaperones: SSGT Rahill, Mrs. Ormerod, Mrs. Burke, Mr. Gregoire, Mr. Carter & Mr. Haskell.   We had a wonderful visit climbing over and into armored vehicles at the Military Museum of Southern New England in Danbury on the way out (Exit 3 on Route 84), followed by a quick tour of the West Point Visitor Center and Museum in Highland Falls.    After dinner at the Park Restaurant, the club played games in Thayer Hall.  Saturday we spent 15 hours at the conference, plus many watched baseball or lacrosse during the wonderful weather.

4. ELLIS CON XXIII best attendance yet!

Over 150 people came through the door at Ellis Con.   Over 35 paid the additional fee to play in the Magic Tournament run by Matt Daigle of ConnectICon.  We had great miniature games with many eras represented.   The first B-17 Queen of the Skies tournament had ten players and everyone had some prize for participating.  GM John Haskell promises to improve for next year and asks people to send suggestions: john.haskell@ct.gov

Thank you to our loyal supporters, especially Jim Smith who has attended all twenty-three conferences and run a game at each: over 20 were Civil War.  We had door prizes from the Citadel, Ice Imports & ConnectICon.  Thanks to the Time Machine and others for donations to the club.

 Statistics:  largest number of ticket holders: 1156, largest profit for club (enough to pay the West Point Motel bill next Spring!)

ELLIS CON XXIII ** SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 2011 9AM to 9PM

ELLIS-CON XXIII

WAS on  SATURDAY - NOVEMBER 19, 2011

Thank you to our loyal patrons and our new friends for the largest Ellis Con in twenty three years!   Over 150 customers, surpassing last year's record-breaking attendance by over 30.

Special thanks for the all the advertising, loan of equipment, and Magic Tournament to Matt Daigle of ConnectiCon.

Our new co-advisor, Dave Carter, provided old-school video games that ran all day.

We appreciated the lunch choices offered during the Craft Show, especially the fact they kept our traditional meatball grinder as a menu option ;-)

The club is blessed with the support of other clubs and dealers who come out year after year to support our efforts.   We will be using the proceeds to tattend Point-Con at the US Military Academy, West Point NY on April 14, 2012.

Thanks to for all the staff support at Ellis Tech that makes the conference happen.
