Eisenhower Boys Soccer 2009 All-League Players

The CBL Big 9 recentelty released names selected as All-League Players. Six Eisenhower players were named overall.

Albert Anabtawi, a junior midfielder, was selected as a 1st Team Midfielder. Anabtawi played in 13 games this season registering 3 goals and 5 assists. His speed, dribbling, accurate passing, and strong shot were recognized as threats by Big 9 opposition. He caused many problems for teams with his skills and was an important asset to the team this year.

Jonathan Herrera, a junior forward, was selected for the second year in a row as a 2nd Team Forward. Herrera's physical and mental strength earned him 7 goals and 1 assist this season, after spending the winter recovering from a foot injury. He played in 13 games and is a hard working player who simply doesn't quit working.

Sabdi Palma, a CBC bound senior midfielder, was choosen as a 2nd Team Midfielder. Palma, a team captain, started all 14 games this season for the Cadets, finishing the campaign with 5 goals and 1 assist. His strong all around play in the center of midfield was a main reason Ike finished with an 8-5 record and earned the 4th District seed.

Chris Beehler, a junior defender, was an Honorable Mention Defender this season. Beehler, a team captain, played in 11 games in a season hampered with injuries. Despite his limited action Beehler's defensive presence was visible to Big 9 teams and his teammates. His leadership, experience, and resolve provided a valuable aspect to the squad this season.

Billy Tinajero, a junior midfielder, was an Honorable Mention Midfielder for the Cadets. Tinajero started 12 games in a variety of midfield positions and tallied 1 goal and 1 assist. His versatility, ball skills, and experience were important assets.

Gustavo Razo, a sophomore forward, was an Honorable Mention Forward. Partnering with Jonathan Herrara for much of the season Razo notched an impressive 3 goals and 4 assists. The left footed transfer from Wapato played in all 14 games and started 12. Razo is a mentally tough, positive player, who likes to confidently go for goal and his contribution to the team was a valuable one.

2009 Season Review

The Eisenhower Boys soccer team enjoyed a successful season this year and laid the foundation for more to come. Finishing the year with an overall record of 8-6 seemed out of reach as the boys lost the first three games of the season and had yet to score a goal. A home shootout loss to Hanford 0-1, an away loss to Kamaikin 0-2, and a 0-1 loss at home to Southridge is how the team started. However, hidden in the results of those games were the beginings of a successful team.

The fourth game of the season saw the Cadets travel to cross-town rivals Davis. Wasting no time, Ike scored 16 seconds into the game through Albert Anabtawi. Sparked by the remarkable start to the game, the Cadets continued working and triumphed 3-1.

Next Ike hosted the other cross-town rival West Valley and the Rams jumped in the lead early on. Ike fought back after falling behind and rallied for two goals to take the lead. West Valley attacked and tied the game in the final minutes sending the game into overtime. After two scoreless overtimes the Rams and Cadets faced off for a shootout. Set to erase their shootout loss to Hanford, the Ike boys were not to be denied as all four shooters made their penalty kicks. Goalkeeper Adrian Tinajero held up his part of the deal, saving the Ram's first shooter.

Ike then lost away to Pasco (ranked #1 in Washington and #2 in the nation), win away at Sunnyside 5-2, lose away at Richland before returning home to host Moses Lake. In that game, the Chiefs speed and quick start put the Cadets down 0-2 at halftime. Sparked by a Marco Marmolejo goal, Jonathan Herrara got in gear to score two more - the game winner coming with only a few minutes remaining.

Ike then traveled north to Eastmont and posted a solid 2-0 victory with underclassmen Guillermo Silva and Gustavo Razo scoring. Returning home the Cadets earned a 2-1 win over the Walla Walla Blue Devils. With that win the Cadets clinched a disctrict seed.

Next up was the Wenatchee Panthers at home and the Cadets played well and won 3-1 behind goals from Sabdi Palma, Guillermo Silva and Billy Tinajero.

The last game of the season saw Ike travel to Kennewick in a game for fourth place. Ike would battle to the end and earn an all important victory 3-2. The win meant Ike finished as the 4th District seed and Kennewick 7th. The two teams would face each other in the first round of districts. Unfortunately this is where the Cadet's season would end as the Lions claimed the win.

All said, an 8-6 season with six players receiving All-League recognition, graduating only four seniors and an excellent young group to return next year makes this season a positive one and laid the foundation for further success.
