Dessau Middle School Band

UPDATE - October 11th

• In the morning ALL students being dropped off by parents must be dropped off at the rear of the building. NO parent traffic is allowed in the front parking lot.  Band students will need to enter through the doors nearest the tennis courts at the rear of the building.
• This website and another website called CHARMS will help you get important information, updates and schedules. Click on this CHARMS link for more information. Throughout the year you will need to visit both this website and CHARMS to stay updated, since they each offer different information.  You will need your student ID number and the code DessauMSB.
• Click on the Forms link to print out the handbook, supply list, private lesson forms and other important information.

Below you can find a list of Preferred Instruments and Supplies that will list everything you'll need to start the school year. If you take the list to any local music store, they'll be able to help you. If you don't know where any stores are, just click here for some suggestions. ALL STUDENTS NEED THE FOLLOWING:

• BOOK: "Essential Elements 2000 Book 1" for student's instrument (except percussion - see below)
• Folding music stand for home practice
• Metronome for home practice (keeps the beat...can also be found for free over the internet)
• A tuner (Korg C30 or similar) is also recommended

FLUTE

• Brands - Yamaha, Gemeinhardt, Emerson (open hole flutes with plugs required)
• Supplies - Cleaning cloth, polishing closh, tuning rod

OBOE

• Instrument available from DMS Band
• Reeds - 2 "medium" strength reeds
• Supplies - Silk swab, cork grease, silver polishing cloth, empty 35mm film canister with lid (for water to put reeds into)

BASSOON

• Instrument available from DMS Band
• Reeds - 2 "medium" strength reeds
• Supplies - Fox bassoon swab, bassoon drop swab, cork grease, silver polishing cloth, empty 35mm film canister with lid (for water to put reeds into)

CLARINET

• Brands - Buffet, Selmer, Yamaha (wooden clarinet recommended)
• Mouthpiece - Vandoren 5 RV with cap and Bonade ligature
• Reeds - #2 1/2 reeds (Vandoren preferred - individual reeds or boxes available)
• Supplies - Buffet hanky swab, cork grease (you may also want a thumbrest cushion, 4-reed "Reed Guard" and Vibra Ease Mouthpiece Cushion)

BASS CLARINET

• Instrument available from DMS Band
• Reeds - #2 1/2 reeds (Vandoren preferred- individual reeds or boxes available)
• Supplies - Buffet hanky swab, cork grease (you may also want a thumbrest cushion, 4-reed "Reed Guard" and Vibra Ease Mouthpiece Cushion)

ALTO SAXOPHONE

• Brands - Yamaha, Selmer, Conn
• Mouthpiece - Selmer C* with cap and Selmer ligature
• Reeds - #3 reeds (Vandoren preferred- individual reeds or boxes available)
• Supplies - Chamois swab, cleaning cloth, neck strap, cork grease (you may also want a 4-reed Reed Guard and a Vibra Ease Mouthpiece Cushion)

TRUMPET

• Brands - Bach, Yamaha, Holton, Kin, Besson
• Mouthpiece - Bach 7C
• Supplies - Valve oil, slide grease, mouthpiece brush, snake brush, cleaning cloth

HORN

• Instrument available from DMS Band
• Mouthpiece - Holton Farkas MDC
• Supplies - Rotary oil, slide grease, mouthpiece brush, snake brush, cleaning cloth

TROMBONE

• Brands - Bach, Yamaha, Conn, Holon, King, Benge ("F" attachment preferred)
• Mouthpiece - Bach 6 1/2 AL (match shank to instrument - small or large)
• Supplies - Slide cream or spray, tuning slide grease, mouthpiece brush, snake brush, cleaning cloth, small spray bottle (holds water for slide)

EUPHONIUM (BARITONE)

• Instrument available from DMS Band
• Mouthpiece - Bach 6 1/2 AL (small shank)
• Supplies - Valve oil, slide grease, cleaning cloth, mouthpiece brush, snake brush

TUBA

• Instrument available from DMS Band
• Mouthpiece - Conn Helleberg 7B
• Supplies - Valve oil, slide grease, cleaning cloth, mouthpiece brush

PERCUSSION

• Brands - Rogers Percussion Kit with 8'' tunable practice pad, bell set and stand
• Supplies - Stick bag, 1 pair Vic Firth "SD1 General" snare sticks, 1 pair Ludwig M4 mallets
• Book - "A Fresh Approach to Percussion for Snare" AND "A Fresh Apporach to Percussion for Mallets" by Mark Wessel
