USGS Open House, May 19-20

Have Fun Learning and Exploring at the 10th Triennial USGS Open House, May 19-20

Earthquake Simulations to Gold Panning • Satellite Imagery to Microbes • Science for the Whole Family

MENLO PARK, Calif. – Education and entertainment await visitors of all ages at the U.S. Geological Survey's Menlo Park Campus Open House on Saturday, May 19 and Sunday, May 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Admission is free.

Scientists will share their latest work via hands-on exhibits, displays, web-based animations and virtual tours. Visitors can view demonstrations of cutting-edge science, and speak with our staff about their work in ecosystem health and restoration, volcanoes and earthquakes, natural-resource and water-quality studies, and historic mapping techniques.

"The USGS-Menlo Park Open House is the perfect answer for what to do with the whole family that is different, fun, engaging, active, and did we mention free?" said USGS Director Marcia McNutt. "Bringing your daughter or son to the Open House could inspire a love for science and thus be the  first stop on the path to a rewarding and exciting career."

Visitors will be able to:

*  Explore the tools and equipment scientists use to understand our world, from boats to microscopes, airborne LiDAR and satellite imagery,
*  Find out about water quality, earthquake probabilities, and mineral resource assessments,
*  Pan for gold,
*  Collect science trading cards and find all the locations to get them stamped,
*  View rocks collected from various locations around California,
*  Dress like a scientist, and get their photo digitized into the research environment of their choice,
*  Listen to presentations on recent earthquakes and tsunamis, land change in the U.S., volcanic hazards at Yellowstone, unconventional oil and gas resources, and projects related to restoring South Bay salt ponds,
*  Buy topographic maps, earthquake hazard zone maps and other scientific publications,
*  Bring in rocks, minerals, or fossils for identification, and
*  Try to guess the locations of popular U.S. landmarks using satellite imagery and aerial photography.

The California Geological Survey, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and other USGS partners will be on hand to round out the event with their own exhibits and displays.

In addition to science, the Open House will offer live bands performing bluegrass, ethnic, and traditional music from around the world. Tours of the USGS gardens will be offered, giving visitors a chance to see the second-largest collection of rhododendron varieties in California.  Visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic and enjoy our gardens in full bloom. The onsite café will also be open with a range of food and drink for purchase. The USGS Campus is convenient to public transportation and is a 15- to 20-minute walk from the Menlo Park Caltrain station. Parking will also be available at neighboring businesses.

The USGS Menlo Park Campus is at 345 Middlefield Road, Menlo Park, Calif., 94025. For details, visit the Menlo Park Open House website<http://openhouse.wr.usgs.gov/>. (http://openhouse.wr.usgs.gov<http://openhouse.wr.usgs.gov/>)

Bible Bee 2012

http://www.biblebee.org/

How can 2 cards a week and 20 minutes a day deepen your family's relationship with Christ?

Our desire is to help your family move closer to God and closer to one another as you learn, live out, and celebrate His Word. Register your children ages 7-18 years for the 2012 Bible Bee and learn how we can equip and encourage a lifestyle of investing in and living out your relationship with Christ.

In return for the $30 Registration Fee, each contestant receives, on June 1st:

  • 25 Bible Memory Cards. That works out to just over 2 cards per week during the summer, a "do-able" goal for your whole family!
  • A Bible in one of five translations

  • A "Sword Study" in-depth study on one book of the Bible leveled for three age groups, enabling the whole family to study the same book at the same pace. Sword Studies don't just teach the Bible, they teach a lifelong skill of how to study and apply the Bible, in just 20 minutes a day.

  • An official participant Bible Bee T-shirt and button

  • Gifts from our ministry partners that support the Sword Study learning

  • A Parent Guidebook that gives a solid overview of the study and includes a Family Bonfire Guide, so that you can easily lead your family in fun times of learning and sharing what the Lord has taught you throughout the week.

  • Click here to see "Bible Bee Basics"

Other resources, such as custom Musical Scripture CD's (word perfect verses in any of five translations), several computer software games and programs and an iPod/iPhone app, all help make Bible memorization an attainable goal for you and your family.

Your children can show their progress in the Word at an encouraging Celebration Day on Saturday, August 25th!  The top 300 from across the country will be invited to compete for $260,000 in prize money at the National Competition!

Finally, the material you were looking for to help your whole family grow in your relationships with Christ, together!

Family Registration is open April 1- May 31st at www.BibleBee.org.     Click here to read the 2012 Competition Rulebook.

Children Ministry Community Service Program

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD

John 3:16 says: For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him, should not perish but have an everlasting life.

Operation Christmas Child is coming! God gave us the best gift ever on Christmas as an example for us to also give a gift for someone else. By participating in this community service program, your children will learn about the way how shoeboxes can change someone’s life. These shoeboxes will travel throughout the world to children of impoverished and war-torn nations. These precious children will also hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ preached in their own language.  In many countries, Samaritan’s Purse, is the only Christian organization allowed inside their borders.

Join Our Children by simply participating in this program through:

  1. Prayers
  2. Donation of a SHOE BOX filled with needy stuff (see GIFT IDEAS) with the shipping cost of $7/box (details below on How to Pack a Shoe Box).
  3. Donation of money ( Suggested donation of $10 to pack one shoebox)

You can give cash or check to “Indonesian Evangelical Church” and put “OCC” on the memo line. With this money, we will buy some gifts on your behalf. And on November 11, our students will fill the empty shoe boxes with your gifts during Sunday school.

Kids' EE 2011-2012

http://kidsee.org/

Kids' EE has been called the "most exciting" thing to come along in children's ministries in 30 years! Why? Kids' EE is a discipleship training program for children that clarifies the truths of the Gospel message and shows them how they can share it with others. We teach Kids' EE to our upper elementary students every 3 years. Next Kids' EE will in 2014-2015 school year.

Kids' Evangelism Explosion is based on the belief that kids can share the Gospel and it is the responsibility of parents and pastors of the church to teach them how to do so. We believe the Great Commission is for everyone, not just adults or even youth. Kids' EE lays a foundation for spiritual growth in children and enables youngsters to respond with excitement and enthusiasm to Jesus' command to all of us to be His witnesses. It develops a world-view that is framed by the recognition that without faith in Jesus we are all lost in our sins.

Kids' EE is a visual, interactive approach that teaches fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students the clear Gospel message and equips them to share it with others. The approach to Kids' EE was developed by children's ministry leaders who worked with children to find out what the children responded to. Kids' EE provides colorful teaching tools that make learning the Gospel presentation fun and interactive.

Kids can share the Gospel if they have the tools that enable them to defend their own faith, and share with others the Good News of salvation through Jesus Christ.
